Hello Everyone,

 Just considering getting rid of Sky subscription and (hopefully) switching to Freesat. Currently I have a Sky dish & Freeview aerial installed. The Sky box is an old one now (circa 2000) but I understand I can get a viewing card from Sky for about £25 and use that to get Freesat from Sky with about 240 channels. I have been quoted £474 by Sky for a HD Freesat box & installation plus a card which will be more than another 12 months Sky subscription!!
Can I get a HD box from anywhere else & get Freesat from Sky or do I then become limited with channels? As you can tell I know absolutely nothing so would be grateful if replies were in the simplest language possible for this old man.

Hi suttonbri,
welcome to the forum.
You can get all the FTA, Free to Air channels on most digital satellite receivers and you can buy a better quality HD satellite receiver for a lot less than Sky are quoting.
The only channels that you require a card for are the FTV, Free to View channels, which are not many.
What kind of HD Digital Satellite receiver are you thinking of?
Do you want one with twin tuners, so you can watch one channel and record another, and has a PVR, Personal Video Recorder, a hard drive you can record to?
I never watch British television so I'm unsure which channels are FTV, and require a card, I think Channel 5, and Channel 4, were the only ones.

Once you cancel your Sky subscription the card turns into a FreesatfromSky card, so no additional card is required :)

You can buy an HD box and put this FSFS card into it, although the only things it will give you are

C5 (only required in some regions - Hereford should be ok)
Fiver / +1
Five US / +1
Sky 3
Viva

correctly regionalises your local BBC & ITV services

C4 HD
possibly C5 HD when it launches, *although this one may go into the pay pack*

Hi Mickha and Analoguesat,

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately still not sure what to do next.

I have a (quite new) HD recorder and would like to keep that in use as it is brilliant. As I see it from your helpful advice I have got a couple of options: a) Keep the Sky box and just cancel the subscription - it will then automatically become a Freesat from Sky box?? or b) Buy a new Freesat box and use the Sky dish I have already with it??

Will things need retuning, repositioning or anything like that?

Sorry I am so thick

The worst you will have to do is scan for channels after connecting the stb
