I'm looking for some advice on trying to receive Total TV in South West Ireland .

A friend of mine has a subscription to Total Tv on 16e and he has an 80cm fixed dish.
He said his reception was good up until about a year ago (satellite failure-weaker transponders) but it has deteriorated since.
Looking at the footprints for Total TV it has two beams ,a wide and a European .
According to the footprints the wide beam estimates a 70cm dish being required .However it says its the same beam as Digitalb but I know myself that there is no way that is receivable on a 70cm dish.
I have a 1m Gibertini and its quite weak on that.

The reception on the 80cm dish is ok on most channels on a good day but it breaks up completely in rain .

I presume his dish is too small for stable reception ,I'm thinking he needs a 1m or more.
He has Pink TV on his sub as well but all of the channels are unwatchable.
Is it worth my while trying to see if I can maximise the signal by fine tuning the positioning or is a larger dish the only option ?
Will a 1m be sufficient to ensure reliable reception or do I need a 1.1m ?
I'd be highly grateful for any advice .
Many Thanks
Fano

Total TV is broadcast on 3 satellites co located at 16E

Eurobird 16A & Eutelsat W2M are very strong and you shouldnt have any problems receiving them. Sesat 1 is an elderly satellite and is putting a frankly rubbish signal into western Europe.

These three 16E birds should have been replaced by the brand new Eutel W3B by now but unfortunately it suffered a propellant failure after launch and its now lost.

I get reasonable reception of Sesat 1 on a 1m dish, but its poor in the rain. You will probably need 1.2m or bigger for guaranteed bad weather reception

Thanks for the reply Analoguesat ,its very helpful.
I was aware of the new satellite being lost shortly after launch, pity it never made it.
It seems that Eurobird 16A is the strongest of the 3 satellites followed closely by W2M with Sesat well behind.
Looking at the footprints the vast majority of the Pink channels are on Sesat so they will require a larger dish.
Should the 80cm dish be able to pick up most of the transponders on Eurobird 16A and W2M or would it be better upgrading to a larger dish ?

You shouldnt have any problems with EB16A & W2M on an 80cm - they are both putting out very strong signals.

Do you mean Total TV Bulgaria? It doesn't exist anymore. The newest Bulgarian DTH provider is Satellite BG (the package is on Astra 3B at 23,5*E). Here's the channels list: Lyngsat

I might try to realigh the dish so ,see if I can get most of the transponders on EB16A & W2M.
If that doesnt work I will have to tell him that he will need to buy a 1m or 1.1m dish.

I am trying to pick out a suitable dish at the moment.
I have picked out a few possible candidates and was wondering what would be the best
a)Gibertini 100L ,104cm by 97cm
b)Triax TD110 ,105cm by 100cm
c)FAMAVAL 110 LH,119cm by 110cm

The Famaval dish has the largest area but I'm unsure of its quality ,whereas the Gibertini and Triax are high quality dishes.
What would be the best option?

You do realise theres no guarantee a 1.2m is big enough for bad weather reception?

That was a guesstimate. You may find its 1.5m or 1.8m!

Yes M8,I do realise that.lol
I've told him that Sesat is a very weak bird and that perfect reception in all weather cannot be guaranteed .
1.2m dish is the biggest I am willing to consider, any bigger is impractical and expensive.

I was doing some testing here myself today.I moved my own 1m Gibertini to 16e and fine tuned it.
I got a lock on all of the channels on Total Tv the weakest being the Pink group of channels on Sesat.
On my Dm600 I managed to get a snr of 81% and a ber of 50-200 on those channels.
Now its a good day here, clear skies ,no rain.
I'd imagine in rain it may break up as 81% isnt a very strong signal ,I have about 6% snr to play with.
If I buy a different dish I cannot be sure of the performance, the Triax may give a lower snr I dont know.
Anyway the signal on the Gib is a heck of alot better than he had on his old 80cm which was missing alot of channels on 16A and W2m.

If he can hold off a while Eutelsat will be launching W3C to 16E in a few months time. The 3 birds currently in use will be withdrawn and sent elsewhere.

Oh right, thats perfect so ,I see the launch date is July so thats just around the corner.
Looking at the footprints for the illfated W3B it looks like a 70-80cm size dish should be sufficient for W3C reception in Ireland ?

Something like that. There would have been a new bird in service already if W3B hadnt gone wrong during launch!
