I am waiting on delivery of a TM-5400 receiver this week and have decided on buying a Tring plus card from the 'Darkside' but there website implies that Technomates don't keep the cards 'alive'.

Quote from A***t as follows

"Be aware that a Conax CAM, Dark box SD, Dark box HD or Spiderbox will be needed to activate and keep the cards alive. Many other receivers like "Tech-No-Mates " etc. will not update the card correctly".

Is this correct?

Yes, correct.

Like a lot of monthly update subscription cards, a proprietry module is required in the machine, or a recognised CAM for the updates to work.

Can I corrupt the card by trying it with my Dragon cam?

It's only the updates that are likely to be prevented

I have received my TM-5400, purchased a Tring Plus card and now I'm looking for a Conax cam but have noticed there appears to be different ones available (Smit, mpeg4) or is it all just artwork and If I buy an old cam off ebay will it update the Tring card?

You need the Smit AFAIK

Thanks fergyc, I have googled afaik and still not sure what type it is, I'm watching a couple of Smit cams on ebay will they be okay?

Smit is simply a manufacturer, nothing to do with the encryption within the module.

Have a look for 'Neotion'. Somebody closer than Asia as they are based in France.

Then of course there are the forum sponsors that probably stock CAMs by the bucketload. Mention this site and you might get a better deal.

Does this mean that my Darkbox SD rev 2008 (older model) is suitable for activating, viewing & updating a Tring card?

Just want to be sure before I take the plunge,

Thanks

It should do, according to the information supplied, but you might have to load the latest software patch.
