As I'm back from uni at the moment, I thought I'd experiment with the 45cm Aldi dish that I've been using for Astra 1 reception from time to time down there. From my normal dish, 39°E and 42°E aren't possible due to the house being in the way, so I thought I'd see if they're possible from the garden.

The biggest problem was the mount for the dish as I don't have any kind of tripod, but the old chair works quite well! :D I get around 65% on the Turksat Europe transponders and around 40% on a few West beam ones but not all come in. I've not had a detailed scan of Hellas Sat but I was pulling in ERT World/902 etc. with no worries.

Sorry for the quality of the images; the sunlight made it hard to get good pictures!

LOL, yes on that size dish [due to the dish beamwidth] both Hellas & Turksat should almost come in whilst aligned on either one. Had similar results whilst messing about with a zone1 some time ago.

Nice to experiment in the glorious sunshine.

That's a good result. Must be the ultimate in camping dish setups, though I can't see it being too practical if someone wanted to move into the shade!! You might want to have a go at 45°E as well, as it has easy to catch transponders.

Maybe a few cases of beer on the chair would have helped reception.

Haha :D

I've ordered a cheap tripod now for further experimentation over the summer (weather permitting obviously). The fixings on the back of the dish leave a lot to be desired though and the clamp especially is very narrow (suitable for fixing onto the horrible flimsy-looking mounting thing they supplied) so may need a bit of modding.

I found last night that I can get Hispasat through my window. :D

I discovered something interesting about the supposedly FTA only Aldi Tevion box too - it has BISS support (not documented anywhere that I can find; the instructions clearly state that it is suitable for the reception of FTA channels only!) - you press one of the colour buttons while the infobar is up and it lets you input BISS keys. I won't say anything else other than 'TRT3'. ;)
