Turner gets deeper into India
Turner International is the latest international multichannel broadcaster to focus on opportunities in the fast-growing Indian market.
Turner is increasing its investment in India, entering into a new joint venture with Alva Brothers for a raft of channels. The company already has a distribution joint venture in India with Zee, in which Turner holds 26%, as well as operating Cartoon Network and Pogo.
Turner International, part of the Time Warner’s Turner Broadcasting Systems, is setting up a 50/50 jv with the Alva Brothers for a new general entertainment broadcaster. Turner is also acquiring a minority stake in Miditech, the Alva Brothers’ production house, including the 25% of shares held by private equity investor ICICI Ventures. Turner will hold around 29% of Miditech.
The planned channels will broadcast in a variety of languages, including Hindi but also various regional languages.

This is our first foray in the general entertainment space in India, and we are confident that this powerful partnership, drawing on the strengths of both partners, will deliver ground-breaking quality programming to Indian audiences.”
Nikhil Alva, co-promoter of Alva Brothers, said: “Entering the broadcasting arena with the global expertise of Turner begins an exciting new chapter for the Alva Brothers. The channel will provide fresh alternative content to an increasingly discerning audience.”
Turner is just the latest in a series of international broadcasters to have invested in India. Disney has a stake in UTV which it is rumoured to want to increase, while Viacom recently set up a new venture with TV18, called Viacom18.
