Hiya people.

Firstly may I point out that I'm a stroke survivor and the brain isn't as good as it used to be (I used to be a software engineer!!!)

I have a TV Star S-1000 FTA Satellite receiver connected to an existing Polestat dish that the previous Polish tenants had installed. I also have access to a Sky dish. I've worked out how to do the initial setup and channel scanning, only took a couple of hours!

My main reason for getting the receiver was in the hope of being able to pick up European speedway meetings. However, all I seem to be getting are Arabic and Italian or Spanish type stations!

There is an option to set up a new 'Satellite' by entering values into a screen, but this is confusing me greatly. I can enter the following details:

Satellite name
LNB Type - User, Universal, Standard
Freq1(Mhz) - 5150, 5750, 5950, 9750, 10050, 10600, 10700, 10750, 11300
LNB Power - 13/18v, 13v, 18v
22K - on, off
DiSEqC - off, [port 1, port2, port3, port4
Positioner - off

I also have something called an NIT Search and a PID Search.

In my list of available satellites, of which there appear to be 72, I can see 0192Astra1KR1L1 and 0130HotBird, but not Astra1, or Astra2, etc.

What ~I'm desperately seeking, is an idiots guide to tuning in to other satellites and specifically locating any channels from anywhere that might show Speedway free. As I spend a lot of time at home, due to my disabilities, this would be such a wonderful thing to have.

Here's hoping and many thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum kelvin,
although your satellite receiver is capable of tuning in numerous satellites you can actually only receive the ones your dishes are pointing at, unless you add a motor, to the dish, then you would be capable of receiving many satellites, at least those that we can view, in the UK.
Astra 1 is 19.2E, astra 2 is 28.2E, which includes the Sky UK channels, and the English channels, including BBC, ITV, etc...

Welcome to the forum Kelvin, the Polsat dish will almost certainly be pointing at Hotbird (13East) as thats where the Polsat TV package is on.

The Polish love speedway, but its on the encrypted Polsport channel, I had the Polsat subs and remember seeing it on there, same feeds as $ky $ports use I remember.

Hiya Kelvin , a very warm welcome to our forum. Hope you enjoy your time here.

Dont be afraid to ask any questions no matter how simplistic here - we are a friendly bunch and welcome folks of all abilities & interests here.

Just to answer your initial questions:

Satellite name
Either use one of the sats at a position or the orbital location - for instance I use things like Astra 19E or Eutelsat 36E on my receivers

LNB Type - User, Universal, Standard
Unless you get into some of the more esoteric reception modes you will only ever use Universal. This one is to do with the local oscillator frequency (ies) inside the lnb on the dish

Freq1(Mhz) - 5150, 5750, 5950, 9750, 10050, 10600, 10700, 10750, 11300
A universal will have 2 frequencies - 9750 & 10700

LNB Power - 13/18v, 13v, 18v
22K - on, off
These are part of the same thing - lnb switching. The horizontal / vertical polarity is changed using the voltage & the hi/lo band (which uses the 2 osillators mentioned above is done by the 22khz tone.

DiSEqC - off, [port 1, port2, port3, port4]
For switching a multiple lnb or dishes setup. Some of us have incredible complex switching arrangements on our dishes!

Positioner - off
Leave off unless you are using a motorised dish.

Have a look at this web site - it may make things a bit clearer how the satellite arc is set up here in Europe. You wont get anywhere near all of these, but you can add in additional lnbs cheaply if you want to do a bit of exploring - just ask what you need & someone will chip in

And 'TP Frequency' and 'Symbol Rate'
Can you advise?
Sorry to be such a complete newbie.
Really appreciate your help :)

TP is Transponder frequency and symbol rate is the number of symbol changes in the transmission. These will be in relation to tuning in one transponder in your receiver menu most likely in a menu called "Transponder Scan" or "Advanced Scan".

And 'TP Frequency' and 'Symbol Rate'

Transponder frequency = the frequency a multiplex of channels id transmitted on
Symbol Rate = the number of bits per second on a frequency

So if we take the lowest frequency on 28E:

Image1.jpg

10714H is the transponder frequency
DVB-S is the transmission format (DVB is normally standard definition. DVB-S2 is typically used for high def_
22000 is the symbol rate - 22000 bits per second shared out over the 9 channels on this multiplex
5/6 is the FEC - forward error correction.5 out of every 6 bits is used for picture transmission, 1 out of 6 is used for correcting errors
Column 6 & 7 is the video & audio pids - each channel is unique on any frequency. The second audio pids will be for the audio description for the deaf on these channels - foreign channels can have multiple languages and have up to 20 audio pids
Column 9 is the SID - signal identification. This is a unique figure on any particular satellite.
2E UK is the beam the services are being transmitted on Astra 2E UK beam in this case.

Are the satellite channels that are listed on my receiver, the only ones available to me, or can I program others in (without motorising the dish yet)?
Is there a Complete idiots guide to satellites? The replies are great, but I'm embarrassed to say that much of it is gobbledegoop!!!!
I keep seeing 28.8 degrees and 19.2 degrees. Where is my dish pointing? I assume that ant sats in the same degree as my exising sats, can be added. Or do I need to add them manually?

I think that my dish might be pointing to the Eutelsat Hot Bird 13B/13C/13D satellite - 0100Eutelsat10A and 0130HotBird are showing in my satellite list.

How do I make use of the data given in http://www.lyngsat.com/Eutelsat-Hot-Bird-13B-13C-13D.html as I have NO idea what the columns mean.

Sorry guys :(

Use this chart - its easier to understand for beginners - its basically the same info as I posted above

http://www.flysat.com/hotbird.php

Your satellite receiver will have dozens of satellites pre programmed into it, but you can only watch channels from satellites your dishes or lnb's are physically looking at.

I understand about only being able to view channels being broadcast from satelliytes that my dish is pointing to. But can you explain further how I program additional satellites that might not already be programmed.
What do all the column headers mean?

Freq Pol Mode
SR-FEC
web
V.PID
A.PID
SID Code

Where on my receiver should I enter these values?

In the Menu , Satellite setup or something similar .. Transponder edit .

Put a photo up with the receiver Menu page and will point you in the right direction .

The only things you should need to enter are the Frequency, Polarity, Mode, Symbol Rate and FEC.
Freq = Frequency e.g. 10775
Pol = Polarity, either Horizontal, or vertical
Mode, DVB-S QPSK, if Standard Definition, DVB-S2 QPSK, or DVB-S2 8PSK, for High Definition
S/R-FEC = Symbol Rate, and FEC, e.g. 22000 3/4

Kelvin it will be useless to program additional Sats if your setup doesn't include a Motorized Dish or doesn't have enough Lnbs on a Dish Bracket pointing to these required Sats. As for those column headers they can be filled in from http://flysat.com or Lyngsat.com

Vpid, apid & sid will be populated automatically when you scan a frequency. If you hook up a disecq switch somewhere near dishes you can easily hang extra lnb's off your existing dishes to extend your choice of channels using something like this

$_12.JPG

8 quid from ebay - search for Inverto multi lnb holder. I use several of these and Ive currently got permanent access to well over a dozen satellites positions.
