1320 kbps on the video. Thats just nasty.

Makes you wonder why they bother when the picture is so badly pixellating during fast motion scenes.

Hi Admin,

Thanks for providing us the video data rate of TV Verdade. I believe it is included in the platform of RRsat. For DTH broadcast, what should really be the standard video data rate to get good picture quality?

That depends very much on how much the image moves, but for a typical channel transmitting in standard definition you are looking at around 3000 kbps to give you a reasonable picture. Even then a sequence where there is a lot of change in the image from frame to frame will give blocking.

Depends on the resolution as well, some of these channels look awful because they're at the likes of 352x576 pixels, even sometimes 352x288 (the maximum for SD being 720x576). That obviously plays a part in the image looking extremely soft.

Oh and for a bitrate comparison, the German public channels on 19.2°E, which IMO have about the best SD quality I've seen; have an average video bitrate of 6 000+ kbps (at full resolution)!
