Hi,

Im new to the forum. Seems like a great community you have here, lots of very useful information.

Im from the UK (Devon/London - a heady mix lol) but emigrated to Bahrain in the new year. I have very gratefully had a DreamBox 500 installed this eve, and am wondering whether there is a way to access UK channels?? Im thinking in particular BBC1 for the F1 season ;)

Is it possible??? i have run a search and couldnt find any obvious answers, but apologies if its been covered before.

Cheers

Tom

Welcome to the forum dolestar

Well the first question has to be what dreambox are you referring to

Is it a 500-s for satellites
or a 500-T for terrestrial reception
is it a 500-c for cable

If the latter then we do not discuss c a b l e on this forum.

You do not mention any other equipment e.g. dish lnb which is why I am asking the question.

From where you are the only possible way of UK TV is to set up a sling box and a fast internet connection at both ends, do a forum search for slingbox there is loads of information on the forum

You can probably get your F1 fix from showtime on Nilesat at 7deg West assuming we are talking satellite.

You have no chance whatsoever of getting any of the main uk channels in Bahrain via satellite, so start looking at other satellite providers.

As Topper has said try Showtime on Nilesat

thanks for the replies and the welcomes.

It is the satellite model. We've got 4 sats on the roof of our villa for some reason. The guy who installed it did some kind of fiddling and downloaded stuff from the Gemini satelitte?? this is all new to me - i loved Sky+ in the UK, but this is clearly much more compex.

I have lots of channels, but some either take a long time to start after selecting them, freeze when watching them or just arent there despite the current 'whats on' being listed in the directory. Discovery Lifestyle (or whatever its called) is listed in 3 different sections for example but it wont actually come on - Miami Ink is another tv favourite, so was hoping to find that on there.

Still ive got lots of premium movie channels which is a plus - and many of the most hardcore mature content channels i have ever seen lol - which is a real novelty in a country where all mature content is illegal (yet hooking isnt!?).

The model i have looks a bit like a car stereo if that helps. So what can i do with this little box of tricks?? ive read (but not understood) about connecting to it via ftp on a network and uploading info to it?? What does this do? (forgive my noobness)

Sounds like (from the freezing etc) that you are set up as a card share client in which case I would not touch it as you will probably lose what you already have especially if you do not know the password to get in the menus

thanks Topper

how can i tell if thats the case? i have free access to the expert set up options if thats what you mean?

As the experts mentioned, you have CS and it would be better not to fiddle with it.
You can watch BBC Prime on Hot Bird 13E which is FTA at the moment, but will vanish soon. If this is not included in your present package, then you can buy another receiver, preferably with a CI Slot and buy a BBC Prime sub and have one of the dishes pointing to Eurobird 9E (if it isn't already).
Will need a compatible Viaccess CAM.
Also it is included in Showtime on Nilesat 7W.

By the way, there is an interesting conference in Dubai starting today.
Should be interesting if you can find the time to visit.

thanks for the info. Id love to attend but alas work commitments wont allow. I had hoped to go to Dubati Desert Rock this weekend, but works put paid to that also :(

BBC Prime is dissappearing shortly you say? thats a damn shame. Im curious about your reference to it being 'free to air' - alot of the channels i am picking up are only available by subscription with other providers, so does this mean i may not loose BBC Prime (which i believe i am recieving in the Orbit seciton of channels?

BBC Prime will disappear from Hot Bird 13E during March, but move to Eurobird 9E (it is already there).
