Just used, for the first time, the Passport Office online renewal service.

It was pretty easy to use and did a certain amount of image recognition, resizing and cropping of an uploaded image file.

Saves faffing around with photo booths (apparently some of them can now produce an electronic file you get a link for, to allow the Passport Office to retrieve the image remotely) and/or going to the Post Office to get pics checked and verified.

Although I've submitted the application, they won't go further until my expiring Passport arrives by snail-mail.

Has anyone else used this system? Were there any problems?

Renewed mine using this UK service in may last year.

Had to get two new passport photo`s which were verified by the local police at their station, sent my old passport with new photo`s by registered post and 10 days later my old and new were delivered by DHL courier ( to my home address, had to sign for them with ID ) in two separate envelopes.

Great service to Norway

Regards

Great turnaround!

They say three weeks, but even my last handraulic renewal only took three working days (Sensible to do these things in January, methinks)

Do you happen to know if the UK passport office issue a waterproof version? I don't think mine will survive another 'wool wash'....even with fabric conditioner..

I had no idea you were British, Pete :unsure

I have to say there are other services available on-line. Over the festive period, my daughter (living in London) finds it easier and cheaper to borrow my motor, rather than spend hundreds of pounds on various journeys all over the UK, distributing and receiving presents, which I am quite happy for her to do and she is insured for such occasions on my policy. A couple of months ago she had notification that her driving license was due to expire and then promptly forgot to renew it. After arriving home to pick up the car she suddenly realised her error and proceeded on the Saturday night to update details and her photo on-line. Lo and behold she received confirmation of application and the fact that it had been approved, on the Sunday afternoon. I can only assume the DVLA has an automated system now as I doubt there would be people working weekends. Perhaps there is automation within the passport office as well

Just a case of ticking the right boxes maybe

This looks very promising seeing as both myself & OH need to renew our passports in the next couple of months

Submit application now, your new passport will be adjusted to the old ones expiry date 10 years later.

Regards

Edit

You can renew your passport at any time. When you renew your passport, time left on your existing passport is added to your new one, up to a maximum of 9 months.

Just got an update saying the Application and Photo have been approved. SWMBO took the pic for me. Not sure if "selfies" cut it!

Already on its way

Bloddy hell thats damn good service. Now lets hope they havent mixed the pics up between yourself & your good lady :D

Yes, very good indeed.

I'm quite impressed by the improvements in many areas of Government Service Provision online.

SWMBO and I both have Personal Tax Accounts, which are absolutely superb. She's an Employee and I'm (nominally) Self-Employed and they are very useful to each of us.

I think I'm turning into an old git ahead of my time. I resent the increasing use of contractions in official correspondance: "we're", "it's" etc, whether be it from the bank or government in its various forms.

All done: Exactly a week from starting Online Application to receiving cancelled Passport by snail-mail two hours before the Courier brought the new one!

I've no idea who the chap in the photo is, but he's strikingly handsome .......

I'll also need to do the same thing soon as I need to go to Motherland in summer and the visa requires a 6 month validity period after visa end date.

There's a financial incentive to use the online service, rather than the old way, after the recently announced Fees increase!
