hey peeps i ordered the universal soft roof racks,
got it delivered today,
i havent opened them yet but will do soon

I'm going to order a set soon, can't wait to see how well these work :)
Best thing about Amazon though if they aren't very good it's so easy to send them back.

yea amazon customer service is pretty bang on

im bidding on the 2.4m cm dish, so if i get it i'll be using these soft roof rackss to go and collect it

for the price i thought i might as well get it as it will come in handy for other stuff and also will fit in any car.
so even if i change car i dont have to worry about it not fitting it

Yeah thats the great thing about them you can keep them in the boot. I thought they would be perfect for dishes as a nice bit of padding on them.
Hope you win that 2.4m mate! Looks lovely

yea im just going to keep them in the boot so they'll be handy for anything i need it for

yea i hope so too but i reckon it will go for a lot more then im planning to pay
 
Also need a LOT of thickish nylon rope with which to tie everything down to the car, and NOT just to the roof rack - otherwise the wind will lift the whole lot straight off the top of the car (apart from possibly getting nicked by the passing Fuzz for having an unsafe load!). The REAL Problem is then finding enough places on the car to which to tie down to without breaking anything on it!

Actually, I somehow doubt that the soft rack approach will work, and think that you really need proper roof rails which are firmly bolted into the car roof - like you see on most estates like my Octavia. I regularly carry 2-4 6ftx4ft or 6ftx6ft fencing panels on the roof of that and don't need to tie to anything but the roof rails and their mounting brackets. OTOH, I then drive very carefully (40mph max anyone?) , check the ropes after a couple of miles or if I feel/hear/see the slightest sign of anything moving up-top (it can, and it will, if you are not very careful with the roping down!).

They will be fine if he's securing the dish with straps through the car door openings.

you strap it down with the straps that are attached to the soft roof racks,
yea ill make sure i driver very carefully regardless

yea the straps go through the inside of the car and then back over the item thats placed on top of the car

Needs pretty long straps (at least 2x 4m or more - not cheap!) and doing them up "tight enough" could harm, at least, the window trim rubbers, if not something else.

BTW: @saj1985 - do you realise that your car is less than 1.8m/6ft wide - so a 2.4m/8ft dish could stick out at least 0.3m/1ft from either side of the roof! That can be scary when you get close to anything in traffic - and could certainly attract attention from the "authorities"!

Personally I don't think I would be happy carrying something that size on the Octavia, which is almost 2m wide, unless it was for a very short
distance.

I've carried a 6m scaffold pole on my car, fine if you do it properly and if anything overhangs you need to put visible markers on it.
Also that 2.4m dish is in 2 halves :)

the dish comes in two parts, so it wont be hanging over the car

look at the listing
Raven andrews channel master 2.4 meter dish with lnb | eBay

plus the distance is not that far just a few miles,
besides i asked if he could deliver it and he said yeah

OK, hadn't looked at that ad and that makes a big difference - and should be do-able without too much trouble. Might even get the halves inside if the rear seats are lowered and the tailgate is tied down over the trailing edges of the halves??
 
When I had a Mini-Traveller decades ago, I once got a double bed with a folding frame AND the mattress in it (although the latter might have been tied on top of the roof - can't remember! :D)- had to tie the rear doors open and together though!

yea being in two halves makes a big difference

yea could potentially get it in the car with the back seats down
