Upgrading lnb for HD

Triax 88 Dish, Polar Mount, 12" Superjack, Technomate 5500DAPCI, Xcam Module
My Location
Northampton
Just bought a new TCD Tv and want to upgrade my existing 0.3 lnb.

Are there any LNB's for Analouge and HD? Whats the best one around?

Can't see any point in "upgrading".

A 0.3db NF LNB is absolutely fine for HD (Which requires no special LNB, just a common or garden one!)

Must have my settings wrong on my Technomate 5500DAPCI as the picture is awful comapred to the inbuilt freeview channels.

TV screen is set at 16:9 but sat reciever is at4:3 but even when thats at 16:9 it still doesen't seem right.

Any pointers or where in the forum I can best post this issue?
 
be aware most foreign channels are still using 4:3 ratio especially on those on 1west

only upgrade the lnb if you need more inputs for a twin feed receiver etc

the image quality of sd channels is never going to be perfect on an lcd tv you need to tweak the settings to get the best you can on sd channels.

also are you using rgb scart for the receiver connection as that will make some improvement to the picture quality
 
Am using an rgb scart. When I go into my sat reciever menu the lettering looks like blocks, no smooth lines etc.

If tv is at 16:9 should the receiver menue be set at 16:9 too?

Or would it be best to connect via composite links?
 
when you go into the receiver menu there will be an option to choose between rgb and pal, choose rgb this will sharpen up the image. its called video signal type or something like that.

best to leave it set to auto on the receiver so it will display the correct ratio on the foreign channels on your technomate receiver

Unfortunately the screen ratio has to be set at 4:3 or 16:9 on the reciever and then set for letter box, combined etc. Theres no auto in the menu. So am a little stuck on that one I'm afrad

Happy Festive Greetings mate. Im glad you are unhappy about your HDTV quality.

As a photographer and a freak of good picture quality, I simply can not believe what people settle for. I went to a friends house the other day and from Curries he had got a huge mother of a HDTV. From being a regular visitor to Japan and very excited of the thought of getting an OLED TV, I cant believe why citizens of the UK are happy with the content and don't care about the quality of terrible picture quality on big TVs.

Id prefer to invest in new curtains and have a big wall projector than watch an upscaled 4:3 on a 50 inch Samsung LED. Im taking the choice with sticking with my Trinitron and spending my monies on more dishes:-googly

best to set it to 16:9 and then choose letterbox etc as the german channels and quite a lot now are in 16:9 widescreen, only the ones on digitv etc i've seen in 4:3
 
Cheers Wod. All changed now and is a little better.

Shame the pic is still not as clear as the Freeview digital pic, even though the TM5500 DAPCI is digital.

I suppose it may be better to upgrade the reciever to an HD on in the near future. Looks like I'll need to do some surfing as I'm looking for one that has CAM option, HD, and around £120.

Now thats a challange lol...

There is the Comag SL100hd and Comag SL90hd but I think they have problems with ITV HD. :(

Then there is the Technomate 6800 but I think that is the one without blind scan hence the recent price reduction! It means you would have to check and update the transponder lists manually (a rather labourious process).

If you have an IF loopthrough on your existing receiver you could use a DVB-S2 card in your computer and use the receiver as a positioner. You would need to keep the receiver in standby when using the PC card.

I know this is unrelated to your query, and may also be posted in the wrong place, but is there a chance I could get a copy of your instruction book (if you have one) as I bought a second hand TM 5500dapci without book and have looked for one. Any expences and costs I would gladly pay

The LG 42LH5000 is gong back to currys, not happy at all. Mite get the Sony kdl37w5500 instead.

Hope I can find the right hd blind scan reciever, also hoping blu ray recorders drop in price soon, dam they're expensive...lol

It could be the resolution of the channels which is what is making it look poor compared to Freeview, bitrate could come into it as well. Many Freeview channels are 720x576 with a few at 544x576 but many Sat channels are 544x576 or below in some cases. Scaling 544x576 up to HD or Full HD will look pretty bad. If you try with BBC1, especially BBC Wales and a few others they are 720x576 and around 4.5 Mbit bitrate which beats Freeview hands down by quite a margin. Freeview bitrate barely gets over 3 Mbit now since they lowered the bitrate.

PC Sat card software frequently shows the resolution and bitrate so it's easy to see what channels will be best.
