Using 2 receivers and splitting

My Satellite Setup
Sky dish. now connected to Humax Foxsat freesat
My Location
Hope Valley, UK
I have an LG tv with a built in satellite receiver
I also have a Humax Foxsat freesat PVR which has sat cable in and a sat cable out the cable from the Dish goes directly to the PVR Then I have a cable from the PVR to the satellite input on the TV
I've seen on previous forum posts that using a splitter from the dish is a bad idea In effect my PVR is acting as a splitter I'd like to know if there is any risk for example sometimes I could be recording something on the PVR while watching a satellite program on the TV I would have thought that Humax would have some kind of safeguard to prevent Such damage but I'm not sure Could someone please advise.
I know someone may suggest getting a duel LNB but I'd like to avoid having to pay someone to go on the roof and fix it up

Problems arise with the arrangement you have because not only does the LNB send signals to the Receiver(s), but in order to get access to four flavours of Channel (Some are horizontally polarised, some vertically, and they are split into two bands as well), the Receiver(s) have to send polarity and band switching commands to the LNB.

So, if both the Humax and the TV are simultaneously trying to control the LNB, there will be conflicts.

This is why separate LNB feeds are the best solution, as each tuner can safely and unambiguously switch the relevant LNB Port.

Can you see the LNB that's fitted? It might be the case that it already has spare Ports.

Normally the 'sat out' would be a 'loop-through' output.
That means that your receiver determines if the receiver itself gets the LNB(power) control, or (when in standby mode) gives (power) control to the apparatus on the 'sat out' output.
That way no damage due to the voltages would occur.

The satellite (IF-)signal itself usually is in effect 'splitted' to the sat out output, as you wrote, when your receiver has the (LNB) control. But of course only the part that you are receiving with the receiver: Hor or Vert, high or low band.....

So with normal lnbs and receivers (TVs) you cannot (cheaply) use two completely independantly on one cable from the dish. Each tuner needs its own cable from the dish.

There is no solution that does not involve changing the lnb on the dish.

Possible solutions (using your existing TV and receiver)
1 Change lnb and add new cable
2 Change lnb and fit Stacker/destacker boxes (approx cost 3 figures) at each end of existing cable

Best and cheapest solution is number 1.

Does that mean that with my current setup no damage will be caused?. I assume that it means I can watch either through the television's built in sat receiver or through the Humax but not record with the Humax while watching the sat channels on TV
 
No damage should be caused and when recording on the Humax it should be possible to watch another channel on the TV providing it has the same polarisation and is in the same frequency band as the channel being recorded. A member of the DS and AVForums (GrahamThompson) has posted a link in the past to tables to show the combinations that can be viewed/recorded.
