Using an old Playstation3 - But not for gaming....

Ive been given an old PS3. No controllers or wires, just the box. (Although Im not averse to spending a few quid on a controller if necessary)

Im not really into gaming so what other uses can I put it to? AFAIK its working fine so it seems a waste just to sling it into the recycling bins up the tip

A quick google seems to suggest a media streamer of some sort is a distinct possibility.
 
Apparently they used to be able to have a Linux OS installed, but with all kinds of piracy-related hacking nonsense going on, Sony pulled that feature from the consoles, but you will need at least one controller to be able to operate the thing correctly, I can partly operate mine via my TV's remote using the Anynet+ thing, but some of the buttons aren't mapped out so can't operate it in it's entirity, you can also plug in a USB keyboard & mouse (easier to use something like a Logitech K400 which is two in one), but again the keys aren't really mapped to suit the controller's buttons...

As for a media streamer, you can use them for things like netflix, iplayer, 4OD, and if you're really desperate, nowTV, but, it is a bit of a waste of it's potential when you could be playing GTA 5 instead... :D
 
Im so not into gaming - there an xbox under the telly - the damn thing hasnt been switched on for at least 18 months. I'll have to put that on the network & look at its media streaming potential as well.

Once we hget a better tv it'll probably be hooked up more :D

My exbox hasn't been on for about the same length of time, if not longer, s'not fair having to pay microsoft money to play games online when everyone else does it for free... :-rofl2

Yup - although its getting a bit sad these days - the audio occasionally drops out - but a good thump on the top restores it :D

The Sky HD box connects through the scart (only got the fta HD services) but its started getting audio bleed through from one of my hobby boxes (the Vu+.......) which is only connected via the rf!
 
Nothing that sticking in the back of the car and taking it up the tip wont fix either - audio problems are one thing but discoloured blue patches in one corner from wonky scan circuits are another. :D

Ever since we have had it there have been odd faint black patches on the right hand side visible at times - they look like big sprocket holes from an enormous bit of film!

Currently considering a Samsung UE48H6240 as a replacement.
 
You can get a remote for PS3 and you can watch blurays and DVDs and play other files from usb.

There is also a web browser too that I'm sure you can use and also watch Netflix and all the rest through it.

I've not really looked into media streaming through it as I'm more into games/blurays but will be interested if you get it working.
 
Sadly looks like the PS3 is u/s. Its got the dreaded yellow light of death (3 rapid beeps on startup as the hdd starts to spin up then a red led blinking steadily).

Give it a solder reflow in't th'oven, plenty of recipes online on how to bring back YLOD PS3s in a domestic oven... :)
