Anyone with a Raspberry Pi 3 and want to try virtual Radar, I have an img I am testing.

Just plug a dongle in.

It took me a few days to get everything working.

Dump1090 and Virtual Radar pre set up. (Works stand alone)

Sounds good. Got another PI3, just need a card for the image and a WiFi dongle, as the other PI is tied up with the LAN.

It’s based on the desktop version of Raspbian.

The Pi 3 has built in WiFi. You can control it from the desk top.

Just got round to trying this Chris (I needed another power adaptor for the RPi 3).

It's working really nicely; I'd like to run it permanently, but it'll have to wait until I get another RPi 3, as I really need it for other things.

I like the pastel appearance of the dump1090 map. Is that your work?

No, the version of dump 1090 is the mutability one by Malcom Rob, dump978 should also work flawlessly piped into this version.

As I was using the FlightAware Dump1090.

I also need another pi to run this full time, I am all ready working on an updated version for the pi, with a few new features (if I can pull this off)

Thanks for your feedback as it helps me tweak things.

I was wondering about dump978. As far as I'm aware, that frequency isn't used much this part of the globe, is it?

Is it worth setting up something to catch anything that might be transmitting?

I have it running on my set up in the garage, as it’s mainly used for weather/NOTAM information, some helicopters also use 978, for me with westlands and yeovilton so close I wanted to give it a try, just waiting on my coax order so I can connect the thing up to try it out.

Marshall's Airport is just over the common here, I get quite a few 'copters fly out of there.
Might be worth rigging something up.

I used this Adding a 978 Mhz Receiver – ADS-B Exchange

To add it to my adsb setup, I just need to add the aerial to it.

If I have done it right, it should pipe the 978 stuff straight into dump 1090.

Acars is also worth playing with.

The photo above is acars running on a pi stuck on the back of the tv (for now)

If you have a problem with the screen going blank, the way to fix it, install a screen saver, then disable it.

I used this

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install xscreensaver

Noted. I'll see if I get anywhere with my set-up.

Im downloading it right now, having an Asus Tinker Board that for now is "resting".
2 Questions:
1. Can I change the IP address Im in a different network metrics
2. Is the gain value changeable with the sudo nano command or sudo piaware-config rtlsdr-gain xx.x ?

The gain should be changeable, I can’t remember what I set it to. Normally I would use auto gain.

I am waiting for another raspberry pi, and some other parts to arrive so I can run it full time, as I have a few things to add and improve on.

If you do get stuck I will flash a card and temporarily boot it back up.

Happy tinkering :Y

Hello Chris
Thank you for answering my questions.
Probably is the sudo nano version, but I will figure it out.
I have to set the gain at 28 anything higher and I have overload (actually the ideal value in my case is exactly between 25.4 and 28).

Sorry to hear you have been having some trouble downloading the img file.

The only thing I can think of is it’s to do with the size of the file 16gb

How are you downloading this? Eg import file into your google drive, direct download?

My download stops at about the same point. Ive always had the same problem with big files - they halt between 2 & 3 gig.
