Visiosat - ex post office - advice please

Hi Guys,

Apologies - I know so little about satellites I was not even sure where to post this question.

I have what looks like an rx/tx visiosat that was formerly used at a small post office up here in the Highlands.

Polite answers only please ...... Is there a good use I (or someone else) could be putting this too ?

Please post pic, and preferably a size measurement as well. If it's the Rx/Tx type from Visiosat, then it's single focus, and either 120cm SMC, or 90 or 75 cm steel.
It may be a Gregorian, which means there's an additional small circular reflector where the LNB normally goes.

These are nice dishes, especially the SMC (glassfibre re-inforce plastic). If not too tatty (i.e. broken), it'll give you very good signal on Sky/Freesat, and can be motorised etc to cover many things. (I have a slightly battered SMC 120 Rx only version. It'll set you back 200 GBP or more from new.)

Only trouble is, it'll have an LNB holder which is not directly compatible with a normal "receive only" LNB that you would normally use with your domestic receivers. Sourcing a replacement may be a problem, it may be more cost effective to buy a new dish.

But post a picture, and we can be much more specific.
 
Hi Guys,

It is 120cm.

I have photos but attachment managment tool doesn't seem to be working. It is completely undamaged as far as I can see.

Looks like a nice dish. Depends what you want to use it for I suppose. If you want to receive only,and both polariries, it looks like it would be possible to remove the OMT and fit an universal LNB in its place. If the feedhorn has a C120 flange, them it would be pretty straightforward.


The OMT splits the feed from the feeedhorn into two polarities, one is used for transmit and the other for receive, keeping them on separate polarities very much helps to isolate transmit from receive (essential!).

BTW the dish is of the Gregorian design, with the sub-reflector. That type of dish usually perform above their size.

here are some pics of a visosat 90c.cm - that is in use localy --
looking at other pics of these dishes on the internet - including the visiosat website -- it seems that the sub reflector is mounted downwards on the 90,s and upwards on the 120,s

Anyone know why this should be ? -----

I really know zero about these things.

We live near Inverness, we have sky+ and the signal is reasonably good (except on some +1hr channels occasionally).
My Husband is Turkish and we don't currently have any Turkish TV channels.

Q. Could we use the visiosat dish to continue to get sky and get Turkish channels ?
Q. Would this be very difficult to achieve ?

If the answers to the above are no and/or it will be very difficult, then I would be looking to sell the dish to someone who will be
able to appreciate it !

Surely with the LNB underneath in your picture it can't be seeing the whole dish? You'd think the arms of the sub-refector would produce shadows on the main dish?

Both look like very nice dishes though!! Would be interesting to know how that 120cm would perform.

i tend to agree -- but that is how the visiosat website shows them ?
there must "be" a reason

That is a very nice dish you have got yourself there. You could recieve English and Turkish TV channels by motorising the dish, but you would seriously comprimise the functionality of your sky reciever. I would suggest leaving your existing sky setup be, and use your new dish on a seperate reciever for the turkish channels, and anything else that is of interest to you.

I think the first thing is to figure out the best way to get a universal LNB on there. As Robbo says, if the feedhorn is a c120 flange it's nice and easy. Best bet would be to seperate the feedhorn from the LNB so you can see how the two fit together.

hi - dvk-
I dont live near inverness - but will be on holliday in the far north west highlands -in early may -- and usualy pass through inverness on my way to or from Ullapool - (are you on that side of Inverness )

i,m not a pro- installer, or looking for an installation job :)satellite is just a hobby for me .
but i,v had 10 years of playing around with dishes and doing my own installs on all the available satellites recievable from the u.k.

i would be happy to stop off - if its on route-- and if you want to wait till then , --- and check your dish for fitting a normal C120 l.n.b -in place of the send / recieve one that is on it now ---
and give any advice i can on where to site your dish for recieving turksat at 42degees east or other satellites---
and any other hints and tips you might want for setting it up

i would also go along with the advice "rick " gave in a previous post and keep it seperate from your sky setup - and use a seperate reciever of some kind to recieve the turkish channels - a cheap free to air reciever would do the job ----
you have a good dish there that would give good service once setup ,

if you have found somone local to do it for you -- or do not wish to wait -- to proceed with your own install -- thats fine ---
