Very, very cool. I guess there's not enough juice to take pictures any more? Is V2 still transmitting?

V2 is still on air.

The V1 cameras were turned off years ago, firstly to save power, and secondly there isnt much to photograph now as its too dark!

I think one of the last pictures was the famous blue dot photo

NASA probe hears "shriek" in space as it leaves solar system

A strange, unearthly “shriek” greeted NASA’s Voyager I spacecraft as it became the first man-made object to enter interstellar space.

A strange rising “howl” was detected by instruments aboard the 36-year-old probe, which has travelled 12 billion miles away from our sun.

The sound was transmitted back to scientists on Earth, over a distance so vast radio waves take 17 hours to reach us. Science site iO9 described the sounds as “creepy” and “wraithlike”.

I figured the noise was the stowaway on board,Lord Lucan, realising he'd couldnt get back for afternoon tea!

Hardly a 'shriek', now if it had been something like this.....

Just out of interest - what kind of receiving equipment do they use to communicate with V1? How do they even catch a signal from so far away?

In space ..no one can hear you shriek...

I suspect it was Voyager itself shrieking...
You'd shriek too if you were boldly going alone and afraid toward the Oort cloud .

On a serious note ..it just shows how scientists and engineers built to last back in the 70s.
Both Voyagers are testament to their skills and acheivement.

So long Vega ...if you return for a visit ..please dont threaten our blue dot..
We love you...

Its been confirmed Voyager is now out into interstellar space with some interesting new measurements

The radioisotope gennys are fading fast - shes down to 23W of power from the 470W at launch.V1 is expected to go silent in the next 10-15 years or so, although assuming the Klingons dont shoot her up she will carry on sailing through space for a few million years :)

Or if it doesn't end up returning in a couple of hundred years surrounded by a big blue cloud calling itself V'Ger... :-rofl2
