Hello Friends,

I am Mr. Singh from India, Sorry for not disclosing my name. Some professional reasons.

Me along with my company are in the way of planning to start a TV Channel along with a Radio Channel.

But unfortunately, we do not have any experience in setting up such business in the past. Neither we have any contacts from where we can seek such help.

So if Someone please help us in educating about the process, equipment and other formalities to start a Satellite.

Anything whic can help us, would be appreciated.

Singh

Welcome to the forum Mr. Singh aka......

I suspect you may have misunderstood the purpose of this forum. It is a satellite enthusiast/hobbyist forum, where we use domestic equipment to receive transmissions from satellites on the Clarke Belt. You need to know about uplink equipment to transmit channels. Whilst there are many knowledgeable members here only a very small number (if any) actually have any involvement in the transmission of channels to these satellites, therefore it is unlikely that much help will be forthcoming.

Have you considered contacting one of the satellite companies like Eutelsat or SES?
Perhaps a good place to start would be your Indian government business/enterprise department as your country has so many restrictions in place regarding broadcasting it may not be a viable business opportunity

Find money - a very great deal of money.

Dont know the exact figures for Indian channels but we discussed something similar for a uk channel on one of the other forums Im on a couple of years back. Consensus was you would require something along the lines of £200,000 to £500,000 UKP a year just for the infrastructure and satellite carriage costs for a tv channel.

Programming costs are extra of course, and that depends solely on what format you would want to transmit..

Basically you need
studio facilities - rental probably
Playout facilities
backhaul capacity from the studios to the uplinking station.
Transmission / distribution capacity on your desired satellite
encryption facilities if you want a pay service
all relevant licences and assorted paperwork for your relevant country

You need to talk to the major satellite operators which cover your region, and for studio facilities you could investigate somewhere like the Dubai Media City - i know its not in India but that doesnt matter these days (and anyway I dont know of any studio facilities in India!)

Hello, thank you both of you. That what I thought while posting this question that I might be on wrong forum. Well, money is not a concern, I believe that amount you said is not same in India it would be a bit low but still, if we have to pay that much amount, we can pay.

Ok, so apart from getting a license from Indian Broadcasting Authority, I want to know that for now, we are taking baby steps and we are planning first to launch a 24 hour Music Channel. So I think that wont require any large investments.

So can someone please educate me about the equipment required?

Lol - I like your optimism- a music channel will need a very great deal of money as every single track will need to be licenced from the record companies. Youcant just download them off you tube and play them out unless you want a very large legal bill landing on your doormat.

You REALLY need to to talk to some professionals - we are a bunch of hobbyists who might know a lot about reception of satellite signals, but are working on educated guesswork when discussing the transmission side of things.

Get in contact with Arqiva and RRSat - they will be able to give you an idea of equpiment required and may have offices in the India region

Thankyou for the reply Admin. But you got me wrong, from Music Channel I mean with whom record companies promote their new albums. Not the one who plays the music on their own.

Thanx for the Information.

Dear Mr. Singh,
I am impressed with your idea for setting up a TV and radio channel, but It is going to be quite a challenging project.
As there are numerous Indian channels, you would need to offer viewers something really different from all the other channels, if you want this enterprise to succeed.
From what I have seen already on the Hot Bird 13E satellite, all the Indian channels have terrible video and audio quality. So please think about this point and don't be tempted to cut down on costs by giving your viewers just another bad quality TV channel.
As mentioned before, the transmitted content is of utmost importance, unless you want to setup your own studio and produce original work.
Would be interesting to know what sort of content you intend to transmit, as there might be restrictions by the Indian Government on adult, political, etc. so you'd better check this point first and get their approval.
RRSat is a well known company and they have setup many channels for providers on Amos 4W and Hot Bird 13E.
Wishing you a lot of good luck, you are going to need it.:)

Well, I hope you manage to get this going, let us know how you progress.

If you ever manage to set it up, don't forget which friendly forum gave you this excellent advice - we are always happy to have new forum sponsors

Thanx for the Wishes Sir..! We are planning to give the maximum Audio/Video Quality. We can compromise to extend the launch date but not on the quality. You rightly said, Indian Channels arent that good. Most of them are good in Video output and then again, at some point they lack the sound quality. The content as said, would be music only. No Political Bullshit or Adult Content.

I had sent an email to RRsat about the information we want, now I am waiting for their response.

I will update you as soon as I got a reply from them.

Without giving away any secrets, when is your planned launch date?

You couldnt transmit any adult stuff even if you wanted to - its forbidden in India :D

dear mr singh
too bad india is not closer to italy.
my friend pete would set you up.
he does not service india.
he builds all the up link equipment himself.
he set up 2 or 3 naples based uplinkes here.
you would need permission from the satellite providers and a contract.
they yearly ammount is with respect to bit rate.
you will need a mpeg-2 encoder with composet input and asi output.
this encoder comes with 4 audio inputs 2 for the tv channel 2 for the radio channel. they don't cost that much i worked on a digital project here 5 years ago and the mpeg -2 encoder was 3,000 euro each.now it runs $1500 for a encoder, the qpsk is about the same.
the asi output from the encoder would go to the qpsk modulator.
this qpsk modulator would have a 70 mhz or 170 mhz output .
this output would be upconverted to the uplink frequency to a 1.30 to 1.6 meter satellite dish to the satellite in question.
the uplink transmitter pete built himself.
he maintains 70% of the local tv stations here in naples . and he is on the cousel for the italian PTT for the digital switchover here in the area.
the satellite uplink will probaly charge you 100,000 euro a year depending on bit rate.
if you will be transmitting from india for india only you would have to see what the india government wants.
if you are trying to hit europe from india i don't know if you could hit hotbird from there.
well that is my input

Most probably before the 18 Oct, My girls Birthday on that day. so I want to dedicate this to her.

I got an email from RRsat, they said they can do it. I have sent them another email and waiting for the reply.

.

No chance - theres a backlog of around 150 channels waiting for regulatory approval to start transmitting into India.

Which satellite can RRSat use?

Insat 2E at 83E into India

Any number of other satellites worldwide:

(their list needs updating for the most recent satellite changes :D )

If you come to agreement with RRSat it might be worth thinking about getting your programming on air on on of the cheaper European satellites (maybe Eurobird 9A at 9E) to begin with. That would at least get your channel brand known to all the Indians living in Europe who have access whilst you await regulatory approval to transmit direct into India.

I read that somewhere, but RRSat said that I need license only if I want to get it transmitted via Cable Operators and DTH.

As far as the backlog is, money is everything if you know what I'm talking about.

They told me INSAT 2E

I would consider that too. Will ask them, they are very friendly Indeed.

Will update you.

Heya Friends, just got some talk with RRSat. Their policies are somewhat no feasible to us, as the amount they are asking to uplink is us, is near to the amount in which we can get our equipment.

Anyways, I was wandering if you guys know, to start a FM Broadcasting, does one require to Register the required frequency?

Any online store I can see to get the prices of required hardware?

You can call Tandberg Television, they have the prices for MPEG2 encoders and other equipment. INSAT 2E is poor, it have only C-band at a quite small area. I can recommend Intelsat 7 at 68.5°E, and one local Ku band satellite.
