Warning from Facebook: 'Facebook is not a place to make friends'.

I decided to join Facebook a few days ago, and find out what was all the fuss about.

I got my new profile and started noticing a few people from Germany who were typing in English. I thought, 'hey, this is great, I'd like to get to know some new people, make friends and find out about different cultures. So I sent out about 50 friend requests and had about 30 accepted.

All was well, seemingly, until I received a 'warning' from Facebook, telling me I was in danger of being blocked for sending out 'too many friend requests to people you do not know. Facebook is not a place to make friends'. WTF! ({})

'You should only connect to your family and the friends you know'.

Like, HOW BORING IS THAT?!!

So, I have agreed not to send out any more friend requests to people I do not know, or else my profile will be deleted.

What a joke! ({}) :-shifty :D

There is actually reasoning behind that, facebook isn't primarily designed as a chat room or a place to meet new people, it's a place to connect with existing friends and aquaintances. Like most of the internet, facebook is full of spammers fraudsters and trolls, so anyone sending out a host of friend requests to people they don't know will be rejected by the people requested and blocked by facebook. Also, people are reluctant to befriend people they don't know, as they then have access to quite a lot of personal information, photos etc.

If you want to meet new people on facebook, then do a search for pages of interest and communities and join them, then over time you will get to know people enough to send them friends requests, or better still, they'll send you requests. A bit like the forums, there are several people whom over time I now consider friends, but had not originally met in person and got to know them via the forum.

Why would anyone wish to join facebook to 'make' friends ?

You will have been warned because when you friend request, Facebook asks the person you "requested" if they know you outside of Facebook, if they select no, then Facebook puts a strike against your account, if lots say they don`t know you (say after a friend request marathon), Facebook will ban you from sending out requests (normally starts at 24 hours, moving up to a week, then a month and so on)

Thought it was for those who knew lots of people but have no mates! :-)

I find that really offensive pgh13.

I've got a mate, really I have. :-rofl2

Although Facebook can be invasive I do find it useful to keep in touch with friends and relatives. Being quite isolated here means it's more useful to me than others. I've friends who were past helpers here (through helpx) and they are scattered all over the world. Friends locally don't just live 'round the corner' so it's handy to know what they are doing and share their photographs etc. I'd not think of just asking someone to be a 'friend' though on the basis that they live somewhere I was interested in. Facebook is about sharing things between friends and maybe getting to know friends of your friends. I'm surprised there was such a big response from complete strangers to a friend request. I don't respond to a request unless it's someone I know or they know of me through a mutual 'friend'. Even then I treat it with care and due caution before responding.

Facebook has been useful for me too as I have moved around quite a lot over the years. I also went to an international school so a lot of old friends have dispersed all over the world. Facebook helps me keep in touch with people I can't easily meet in person anymore.

Great question ! Totally agree fb friends should be ur real friends not the ones you find there !

Says the man with four Vietnamese 'friends'.
