Website Domain Registration

Several years ago, I had my website hosted with a company in Sweden and regrettably I let them register the domain for me, as I had new idea then how to go about it.
The hosting was ridiculously over priced and very inconvenient as they didn't have the possibility of payment with a credit card.
When I finally decided to host in the US, I asked them to give me the registration details in order to redirect the domain to the new servers, but they refused and told that they will be happy to do it themselves, but there is no way that they would let me have control over my own domain.
Very soon I will need to host with another web hosting, and I would like this time to get full control over my own domain.
What I don't understand is why the registrant would want to keep control over other people's domains ? Do they get payment for that or what?
Does anyone have experience and knowledge about this problem and how to convince them to "let go"?
Is there any legal action that I can take regarding this?
Thanks.:)

What you could do is pre-register the domain on a names site, once the domain lapses, you would automatically purchase the domain, assuming they let it lapse... :)

Otherwise, see if you can get an alternative name (E.G. instead of .co.uk go for .com, or vice versa)... :)

But, legally speaking, if they bought the domain on your behalf, then technically, it is your domain and you should be allowed full access if you so wish, just threaten legal action and see what they do, after all, you paid the money for it... :)

Thanks 2cvbloke.
I don't want a different domain extension.
It is my domain as I pay every year, but it is not getting full control that makes me really upset.
I can understand that the registrant of the domain s_x.com would not want to let go (I read they got millions of $$$ when they sold it to the highest bidder), but my domain is not that glamorous, even though it is a Four letter word, come to think of it .:-rofl2
Any idea what is their interest to keep control of the domain?

I don't think they have the right to deny you to move the domain. I have moved several .co.uk from a UK based provider to a German one, as well as a greek one, all without problems. What you should do is register with a local domain host, and ask them for help to transfer the domain to your account with them.

Other than that, you should contact the Swedish authority who deals with the domains, they will force them to give out the trasnsferring details (for the UK for instance it is nominet.org, they are above all the registering companies)

Hi T_G,
They are not denying me the right to move my website. It is just that I still need their help to point the domain to the new hosting server, if and when I subscribe.
I don't like local domain hosts because they have lousy support and the best are in the US where I can get exactly the type of web hosting and the features that I need.
I think I will consult with a Swedish friend who recommended this registrant to start with (no complaints as he was only trying to help) but got me into this mess.
I have to clarify that the registrant in Sweden didn't register my domain in a Swedish company but rather with Network Solutions (US based).
I still don't have a clue why the registrant won't let go (that was four years ago, so I am hoping that this time they will oblige).
I just want to get some facts before I contact them again.

Never trust a Swede :).

What´s the name of that provider ? I can have a look if You wish

On the contrary, Always trust a Swede. :)

Thanks dig deep for the offer, but it looks like I might have a solution as my friend has asked them nicely and they told him that they will let go.
I am just about to contact their technical people and see what they will suggest.

Network Solutions, yes I had some bother with them as well a few years ago and it was because of a similar problem. It is all down to the Swedish company registering it in their name and even though you own it, the new company simply thinks you are trying to steal the domain from the Swedes. I cannot remember what I did now to get it sorted, I think I put it in my own name eventually but I am sure you have to get the Swedes to confirm something to NS by fax and it had to be copied somewhere.... Uggg memory fails me

I am having a nightmare with the domain transfer.
My domain was registered by Network Solutions.
But the Swedish registrant was reluctant to do the transfer to Network Solutions, claiming that there would be too much bureaucracy.
So I made a transfer request with another registering company, called register.com
Went through the whole nerve racking process until I got a message informing me that the domain has been transferred to me.
When I checked the WHOIS database, all the fields were marked "pending".
As I have now access to the Account Manager, I tried to edit the Administrative and Technical contacts with my details.
Got a message that the updating will be effective within 24 hours.
That was 5 days ago.
Sent a support ticket to this company, but I am still waiting for their reply.
I think that I should have insisted on transferring the domain to Network Solutions, as I like this company and their Account Manager is quite impressive, instead of transferring to another company.
Any idea what went wrong and if I might lose my domain because of this.

Well, before geting all worried ask them again for a reply. Either they have it or they don't. You cannot "lose" a domain. When I transferred some >Greek domains to the German provider it took longer as well - they say 24 hours but it took longer becuase it is between countries (I think).

Phew.......
Finally, and after a week from the date of the transfer, I got a message that the details have been updated.
At the moment it is only on the WHOIS of the registrar, and nowhere else.
Will check after 24 hours.

Tip
If anybody is thinking of having a website, do yourselves a favor and NEVER let anybody else register your intended domain for you.
Web hosting companies usually offer a free domain registration. Don't be tempted to let them do it for you. It will only get you to stay with them and pay them for the hosting of your website for years, before you have evaluated them for their support and hosting features.

Do it yourself. It is really very easy to register a domain and will save you a lot of time later on.
I recommend Network Solutions as a registrar. They have the best Account Manager interface that I have seen so far.

Unfortunately Network Solutions lost me a five character domain name as they did not remind me of the impending expiry.
And they only take online payments, no bank transfers, or cheques (even in the same - USD - currency)

That's terrible to lose a domain. Must have been a well sought after one if they grabbed it so quickly.
I usually keep track of all the expiration date of the domains that I have registered for clients (not directly, but showed them how to register it themselves) and send them a notification reminders so they won't miss on the payment as I don't trust the registrars to do it.
I prefer to pay online by credit card, saves me the hassle of going to the bank and pay a lot of money for bank charges and then go to the post office and hope it won't get lost in the mail.

I use 1and1 for my UK domains and Godaddy for .com and .net domains, both are pretty good and always send me reminders.:)

Not at all. Any low character .com domain is sought after now.

Ours (well that of the bike club - Wimbledon and District - wdmcc.com ) is now 'owned' by some church in the Mid-West, along with plenty of other domains.
Network Solutions have been quite adamant the rules were followed.

I reckon they will try to buy all domains, that way in a few years there will be less mature content on the net.

Not necessarily.
There is a new domain extension suggestion for adult websites, instead of .com, change o to u. :-rofl2
