My Satellite Setup
Sky HD box, KDL LX903 tv, Mk4 Raven Minidish, Self installed, Pc is self built comprises of Intel Core i7-980K, 2 x 480 GTX, 240GB OCZ Vertex2, Silverstone TJ07 case, Asus Rampage Extreme III mobo (pre-ordered), 1000W Akasa PowerPlus, Dominator GT 6G

As the title states what cable do Sky engineers use nowadays.

Reason being I already bought some brown WF100 from aerial shack 45 meters worth, and well the missus didnt like the brown so when I was at work she got the engineer to replace my cable with white cable.

Not impressed as I spent good money on that anyways the white double cable has silver foil/aluminium as the shield any ideas?

Also if anyone wants the aforementioned cable make me a offer

the brown cable is better suited against the brick colour I think as I have used that on my system.

Not seen a cable with silver foil screen before as it's usually copper foil screen and braid but I only use wf100 for cable runs here.
 
The silver foil cable is the cheaper stuff and quality can be very variable, from OK to very poor. I believe Sky would be using wf100 or equivalent, or the thinner wf65.

White cable obviously looks better on a white wall, if everything works fine, and drip loop and silicon has been applied where necessary, I don't see a technical issue.
 
Some Sky contractors are using WF65AL shotgun cable, works OK, but not as good as WF65CU with all copper braid, foil and core, or of course WF100, which is also available in white.
 
Thanks for your replies well it appears I now have a fault.

Basically feed two sometimes shows as not connected even when I have checked everything including the LNB however when I power cycle the box it shows as connected again. What could that be?

Also my box in the lounge apart from when I am recording when should feed two be used? Also I had a line amplifier on feed two would that cause the box to switch to feed to as its main source?

Firstly, you shouldn't be using a line amplifier on any run that's less than 40m in length, it may have been installed to cover up another fault, and the connectors at each end can cause problems of their own.

Many BSk yB+ boxes have issues relating to quality control in general, but specifically tuners (Thomson) , and component failure elsewhere leading to poor channel reception. What you have described could be a failing tuner, which introduces noise into the system and is affecting the receiver in the other room
 
I have removed the line amplifier and now the feed has switched to one very strange.

I was using the amplifier for a communal dish as the signal was just unacceptable, however that is no longer needed :)

Are Amstrad prone to failures aswell, please bear in mind these are brand new boxes
 
Oh and no silicone was applied so it looks like I will be doing that later
 
When feed two shows no signal, swap the feeds around, you'll probably find that it still doesn't, Amstrad boxes are renowned for power supply and tuner problem, often switching off at the mains and rebooting cures it for a while.
 
Hey guys

The latest is when I hook up my satellite finder the power signal is flashing Intermittently at the dish end. However when I plug in the finder at the box end I get a constant light.

Sounds to me this cabling is fecked up already
 
Just how long is the run to the dish ?

Have you made the connection where the amp used to be correctly ?
 
I would say from the dish to the box is 20 meters.

The amp powered the communal feed that is no longer used as I installed my own dish. That feed was for the front room mind which is about a 10 meter run :)

Can you temporarily replace it with your brown stuff to prove the point?
 
Indeed I can when I get in which will be in 90 mins I will report back with my findings :)
 
lol not yet.

Well at the moment I am only getting one feed to the box even though to cables are connected. Very frustrating indeed!
