Are they thrushes ? they look like fledgling cuckoos to me, as they are almost the same size as an adult, but are much darker on the back and tailfeathers.

One sits on the fencepost, keeping guard whilst the other fans itself on the decking floor. After about 5 minutes they swop over.

Every other day when there is a spot of sunshine.

Can't really tell from the photo CH, but probably Mistle Thrush or perhaps even Blackbird juveniles, youngsters often look bigger than adults.
 
Then they are most likely blackbirds as we have loads in the vicinity.

Looks like something a giant land squid would leave behind, I find all sorts of stuff that looks like that after a few of them puppy's squiggle by.
