The organisation responsible for allocating Freeview channel numbers has launched a consultation as to what should happen to BBC Three's Freeview channel number once the TV service closes at the end of February 2016.

Digital UK is considering two options for the future of Freeview channel 7, which would have an impact on where local TV would be found on Freeview, alongside Channel 4 in Wales and BBC Alba in Scotland.

How about keep BBC3 on it. yet again another British institution that thinks it knows what the British public want and getting it completely wrong again just for a change.

They could let CH5 HD have it, could save loads of problems, that is assuming CH5 will go FTA soon, which has only been speculated until now!

Stuff C5 - they have had 2 chances to launch their HD service on Freeview in recent years & backed out both times. So let them join the party up in the boonies wheere only the most desperate insomniacs ever wander. :D

BBC Three's HD channel number, 105, does not form part of this consultation. Channel 105 will be allocated to the next public service channel, currently BBC Four HD.

Channel 5 HD could make a claim on the channel number- although the broadcaster says its "committed" to launching in HD on Freeview, there's been no public indication of any launch date thus far.

Channel 5HD & Sky have said they would like to have a channel in HD on FreeView for the last 5 years but no action just words :-rofl2

The obvious choice will be BBC4 HD :)

The allocation of the Freeview channel number is separate to the issue of what happens to BBC Three's vacated bandwidth. The BBC Trust has demanded more information from BBC management on this issue, to be provided by late February 2016

Just an excuse to have some free lunches & talk a load of twaddle ;)

Given the 700MHz band is going byebye due to EU directives for universal data frequencies for 4G services, they'll probably not replace the channel, just smush everything up into the ever decreasing airwaves...

Brexit will have nothing to do with this. The agreement about frequencies was decided some time ago.

We're still in the EU at the moment. And anyway it's all signed and sealed.

I'm not at all sure it's an EU directive anyway. More likely a European (in the widest sense) agreement.

What? Entirely irrelevant.

In case that was a genuine question - no.
