Whats involved in adding HDD

If I buy a HD receiver, is it as simple as plugging in an external hdd drive to a USB socket to be able to record something or is it a bit more involved.

That depends on the receiver - some allow you to plug an external device in, some need to have it fitted internally.

And some of them dont allow it at all :D
