Hi

I have just purchased a DM500HD and am looking for quality cable to hook the box up to my router.Im wishing to run the cable outside.I just purchased some cable of the bay and it looks poor quality.What are you guys using?

You have two choices for running the cable outside (well three if you count not running it outside!): run the standard Cat5e cable inside some conduiting or obtaining some exterior spec cable with UV resistant outer covering. My preference is the conduiting, especially the flexible type, as you can always pull a replacement cable through with relative ease.

Can you give us the Ebay item number so we can see what you bought?

Incidentally, have you thought about using a poweline network adaptor to run the signal over the house's mains circuit?
 
You can buy external CAT5E cable, just search for exactly that. Standard CAT5 cable is not suitable for external use.

I use them with my DM800 with no problem whatsoever. Really speedy for streaming, the ones I have are rated at 200mbps so have no problem with the dreambox 10/100 ethernet.

There's also a wireless bridge to consider.
 
From the description of the cable it looks like it's already external quality - what makes you think it's poor quality?

You haven't described your situation. A Powerline might be better or even, as andyxxx suggest, using wifi.

Sorry.I have already purchased some cable what looks poor quality and the item number is some different cable.My situation is I dont wish to run the cable from were my router is as it would mean running it around the skirting board in my front room.Had a quick look at the Powerline that does look an interesting option.How well does the wifi work with the DM
 
Errm, the link you originally supplied in response to the question asking what you'd bought pointed to the CAT5E cable corresponding to the Item number I replaced the link with.


So, just to be absolutely clear,the link you Posted was to some cable you wish you had bought, not to what you actually did buy? :confused:

It works with no problems. You can purchase additional router (no need for expensive one, with price less than 25 USD) plase it near your dreambox and configure in Bridge mode. That means that this router will be connected wirelesly to your main router.

Its cable im looking to buy as I had purchased some so called quality cable which looks poor quality.Sorry for the confusion
 
The decision is now yours, I think.
 
As I expected the cheap cable was nasty.I used it to practice putting the RJ45 ends on(How awkward?) as soon as I cut the cable and started to strip it back the wires I noticed the wires were not a single copper core but made up of strands of wire.The new DM has arrived and i'm in the process of playing with it before I replace the trusty old TM5400 Ci+.

That doesn't in itself mean that the wire is cheap - in fact it costs more to make a multi-filament cable than a single strand one.

You only use a multi-filament cable in cases where the cable is subjected to frequent bending or if a single filament is just too damn stiff to bend during normal installation!

I hope I'm not insulting your intelligence, but you do realise that you don't have to strip the individual cores? When you crimp the plug the insulation is pierced and that makes the connection

Yes I did know I just stripped back to see what it was like.Its all done now.Just been tinkering with the DM and reading lots about setting it up for my needs.Its one hell of a learning curve from using the TM5400.Fingers crossed it will all be hooked up and running this weekend
