What is the best surround sound system to go for without having to buy another DVD player/recorder (thats usually included in the home theatre package)??

I am looking for a 5.1 Surround Sound System, to connect to my HD ready LCD TV, a DVD player/recorder, SKY Digibox and Dreambox...

I have a Samsung 37" HD LCD TV in black so I was thinking of getting a surround sound system the same make 'Samsung' just wonder if someone can suggest any thats available out there??

I have Sony STR-DB940 AV receiver which has surround sound.
I am happy with having just two loudspeakers, so I can't comment about the surround sound quality.
Need digital out from the DVD player/recorder or the sat receivers.
Try to check the Sony latest models or other brands.

anything up to £250, anything more and i'll be pushing it cos i am currently out of work,

its mainly for concerts, live stuff, music and films
the effect i'm trying to get is the feeling as if i am actually there if you know what i mean, i had a goodmans surround sound (2 left/right front speakers, centre speaker, subwoofer and 2 left/right rare speakers) a few year back and i couldn't get it right plus wasn't much power it it so I got rid of it when i moved house 2 years back

I say AV receiver is the way forward. You can connect the lot and can look for speakers on your budget and by better speakers later on:)

£250 won't get you much (well it will but it won't sound very good).

If you're prepared to buy used you could get a receiver, subwoofer, pair of fronts and a matching centre on that budget that would sound OK with music and movies. avforums.com have a good For Sale section.

The Onkyo is more than £1000.

Oh, didn't see that.

Then look for the Denon 3805, very good receiver.

Onkyo, Yamaha & Bose are good home theater systems, with what is called "in a box"

for AV receivers Pioneer is good value for money
