Where to start?

Hi. As you can imagine by my name, I have no idea what anything means within the satellite world. I went to visit my dad recently who happens to have had setup a satellite of his own a while back to get some international channels. He is currently trying to help a friend of his fix an issue with his satellite. I decided I would go out there to possibly lend a hand and was completely lost as to what I was looking at! Are there any noob type threads around here that explains the extreme basics of setting a satellite up with an explanation about the different settings and whatnot? I would like to really read up on some of this stuff. It looks pretty interesting. Thanks
