question:

i am going to move abroad hopefully within 2yrs if not sooner (had enough of this country due to state of weather, lack of respect, fuel charges, prices etc etc)

so as i begin looking into it i thought ide do a poll asking where would you go

so please vote and post your reasons for and against (no flaming)
maybe youve already moved and either love it or regret it, i'de love to know

obviously i'll add any more choices as and when

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

Personally, I'd go to Canada or France...

Canada, cos it's not america, and france cos it's in the firing line of Astra2... :D

Probably France for me, but have added the UK, as some non-UK members may well want to come here. :)

New York, Barcelona or Lisbon for me. The inhabitants of all of three cities are damn well happier than the people of south east England! But then they don't live in south east England! ;)

Sweden - its the most pratical for someone who can't learn a foreign language for love nor money, and while keeping a sense of adventure!

An option I may also have chosen would be Japan - not permanently, but 2-3 years would certainly give you a new perspective on the world.

I selected Portugal and mine was the 8th vote........ come out come out wherever you are.

Portugal is not too far to go, good climate, easy going and friendly people. Some lovely properties as well.:)

Don't think I'd drive though. :D

17 votes to date yet as jimbo says he's the 8th vote for portugal and nobody else has come forward. i hope that certain sections of the forum are not just banging in to rig the voting.
i value the oppinions given in this forum, so please if you vote, post reason

Another good thing about Portugal (or at least Lisbon) is that many speak good english. I think this is down to the fact that they show a lot of UK/US programming on TV and all of it appears to be subtitled rather than dubbed. It seems to be the case with all 'subtitle' countries.

Well four of the Portugal votes are guests and one is from a portuguese member, so the results are probably not going to be too accurate.

France, but nowhere near Paris or Ile de France - I went there on a six month contract in 1991, and after three weeks decided I want to stay - I eventually moved on three years ago. The French tend to take their vacation in France because they don't think anywhere else measures up, perhaps with good reason. Climate is better than Greece for 8 months of the year, I managed to live there for the first five years without speaking the language, pace of life is infintely more laid back than UK, food/drink is fabulous and cheap, plus you still get Astra 2d. Oh, and then there's the women...

But I also loved working in Beijing, but it's not on your list...

Wherever you go, best of luck m8...

Cetainly out of the cities it's like going back 30 or more yrs - people seem to respect each other rmore and they still take a pride in theirneighbourhood,

My sister lives in France and I go there at least three times a year, I don't speak French, but can get by with my collection of French words and a little effort.

I like the more layback atmosphere and more gentle pace of life, plus you can still buy a nice house in a beautiful rural area at a reasonable price, it'll probably have broadband available as well. :)

RE France.....it's a big country so climate is very dependant on location. Economics; I think day to day it's a bit cheaper than here but not as much as it was. Property prices are creeping up especially in the more popular areas. A lot depends on whether you need to work. Despite EU regs, its difficult to get a job if you aren't French and even more so if you don't speak the language. On the friendliness front, the French seem friendly enough if you do try to speak their language; however badly. Have a look at the Living France site - they have an active forum with lots of information for the would be Francofile.
