Which Dreambox to get/is it worthwhile?

Hi all, sorry for a completely noob question but I had to ask. The more technical aspects of using the Dreambox I am comfortable with, it is the initial 'wiring up' I am concerned with.

I have moved into a block of flats with a faceplate on the wall which has a freeview aerial (awful signal), an FM/DAB radio slot, and only 1 satellite aerial which runs to a communal dish on the roof. The people before had Sky and we have a freesat box hooked up currently.

Would a Dreambox use the single satellite feed? Is it worth me getting a full HD PVR (not particularly fussed on HD, PVR features I would prefer but are not essential). Would I still be able to use the Dreambox like normal folk, i.e. eventually I want to start watching 3pm kick offs...)

Apologies for the most basic of basic questions, I read through the FAQs and Idiots Guide (which is pretty great btw) but this initial setup is the only thing keeping me from purchasing a Dreambox at the moment! Any recommendations as to which model would be the best for me?

Thanks.

Depends on what model. Most within a reasonable budget will have the one IF input.

With only one satellite IF input to the flat, full PVR functionality is not possible as two feeds are required. The 800Hd for example will record with the correct hardware but only the same program being viewed. The 500Hd maybe another option as other linux receivers.

Hi - With there only being 1 Satellite Feed you will not be able to watch one Channel while Recording another (not strictly true but very close :) ) so a Dual Channel Receiver would be a waste, and if you dont want HD then you are probably looking at a DM600.

HD is worth it in my opinion and more Channels are comming online which would jack you up to a DM800HD.

Either of those can have a Hard Drive Added later for Recording.

Just a mention about the 3pm footy, most of that appears on 19E and 13E, your communal Feed will be from 28E so unless you are going to use a Dish from within your Flat or on the Balcony, that is probably out.

Ok, thanks for both responses - I will have a look at the DM600/DM800HD - disappointing about the dish news but I thought that'd be the case. Can I use my Sky card in these boxes? If I had the Sky Sports subscription, would the Dreamboxes be able to pick this up?

Yes but will require a softcam emulator to read your card ie CCcam for example. Lots of info regarding the use of cards with these receivers in this section.

Thanks again. Will read up more, love messing with this kind of stuff on PC so it should be a bit of a challenge for me - is there an official Dreambox retailer site that the site recommends?

If you look at the bottom of Satelliteman`s Reply there is a Big Link to the Site Support Advertisers :D

Dont give up on another dish scenario, can you imagine the Size of Dish that could be hung on the side of a Block of Flats
