Reading various forms, it appears to me that an awful lot of people have gained the impression that this crack is due to the work of one person.
AFAIK the person or persons responsiblefor this breakthrough have not been named, but it would seem likely that Dream Media have a large part in this, considering the receiver and the CAM with which SECA2 is possible

It could of course be a commercial decision rather than hobby led, we may never get to know though.

Give me an ..E
...
Give me a ..5
Give me a ..6
Give me 2 ..0s
(+ the DragonCam ... shelf warmers so far :D )

No,
my crystall ball tells me, that this time it was done by a group of dedicated
Italian and Spanish amateurs, since every intermediate step from random
MOSC to predictable MOSC with (MaskTable or ChainTable) up to the fully
fledged emu has been widely published and discussed on the Digital Abbey
and ForoAlejandria (Spain), Tiranniadigitale and Digitalfreesat (Ita)
and it took almost 2 years and the emu is now available for free for a growing
number of platforms.
Real pros would make it secretly in a lab within 6 months or so and
wouldn't publish and discuss openly any intermediate results.

Uncle Ruppie had a reason to compromise a competing encryption system but
not one of his own providers in the first place.
Moreover he wouldn't risk an court investigation a second time. In that
case his company would be the prime suspect as there has been a lot of
fingerpointing to him in the past few years (Haifa lab).

It could have been rather done by Dr**m M**tim***a . This commercial
enterprise chooses to meddle with ameateurs simply to save costs
for developing it's products (Via2 BF, linux open platform ... lol).

One person playing a key role was without any doubt Homealone. But there
are also some others like:
  • ilsorcio
  • Golfinger66 (was his former nick Parisino ?)
  • pop-rock
  • NicolaRaglia
  • cicciocant
  • braminio
  • grimaldez

I would tend to agree with you reindeer, there are huge threads on other forums reaching the conclusion that it was RM and co, but with no proof at all, just reasons why it could be.

There a 2 possible eventualities:
  • The arguments I posted above were well orchestrated cover up operations
(Amateurs guessing and MOSCing over a period of 2 years, hacking his own
    provider first, etc ...)
Keep in mind that every hacked Sky Italia S2 channel immidiatly translates
in lower sales figures of his NDS boxes and Sky subscriptions.
A S2 hack in autumn 2002 out of the blue would have raised to much attention ;)
  • Or simply someone else was behind it.

TBH, if I were him (RM) I would take on my greatest rival Kudel
(Seca belongs meanwhile to Nagra France) first where it
hurts him most and harms me the least, this would be France,
Spain, Holland, Germany (Premiere Aladin) and Poland (Cyfra+) but not
where I lose myself a lot (in Italy).

Nevertheless the whole thing is an awful loss of prestige for Seca resp.
Nagra France and therefore an indirect benefit for RM.

Could you please give us some clues on what your assumption of any relationship between Via2 BF ands DreamMultimedia is based?

Let's turn this the otherway round: As i see it without any proof it looks more to me that you are connected to the industry trying to put hobbyist efforts in a bad daylight.

PS It is very easy to make unfounded allegations.

Take it easy m8. To get one thing straight. I am myself a dedicated bruter,
and I wish the whole operation to become a success in the end.
I don't tell here how many areas I have made, nor about my trust level, coz
if they can track me down through this, they would kick me out of the team.
But be assured my PC is currently bruting. BF = Big Fun ;)

But why do the user id's of the Via2 BF community members mostly start
with dt. ? Doesn't this stand for Dream Team ?

To dismiss any allegations that I am biased toward or against any specific company.
I know all the urban legends about :
R.A., thoic, Lee Gibling, the suicide of Boris F., the heart attack of Vorlon,
the hack of S1 and Nagra (by the Swiss Cheese Group :D ) in Haifa, the ...
Without any doubt, N*S has to generate profits and takes no prisoners,
But it got a taste of it's own medicine when DTV's HU cards were compromised by
unloopers in USA and Canada and the ensuing bungled HU --> P4 card swap.
In North America the playing field is almost level (Kudel vs. N*S), in Europe
it's not bcs $ly UK is not hacked.

But allies and enemies dont remain always the same in history. Communism was
considered the most dangerous enemy of the Western Democracies right after WW2.
From 1989 onwards most Socialist countries reconciliated with Western democracies
or became democracies themseleves and Islamic fundamentalism became the enemy nr. 1
So simplified fingerpointing and stereotyping leads to nowhere.

Here is a third eventuality:

There is another company which has meanwhile a lead in world market shares
over N*S even, though their system has been widely hacked in Spain, Poland,
Canada (BEV) and USA (Echostar/DishNetwork)
There seem to be some big holes in the Swiss Cheese :D :D :D

The hack was issued by pros without any involvement of the Italian MOSC community.
Kudels HQ in Switzerland has to develop, market, and maintain now 3 major encryption
standards:
  • Nagravision (originally their own product)
  • Seca (after the takeover of www.nagra.fr)
  • Premiere Aladin (kind of Irdeto1)
Such a diversity is expensive in the long run. The Swiss HQ may decide to streamline
the companies processes by ditching at least one encryption standard.
Why did the hack appear just 2 years after the introduction of S2 ?
Was this the expiration date of any warranty given to $ly Italia ?
Compromising S2 has 2 strategic advantages for the core team of Nagra:
  • Deal a blow to the French competion within the own enterprise.
  • Deprive an external competior (Sky) of some of if his revenues in Italy.

Is the key itself the answer to the question who did it ?

First I have to apologize for posting a key but in this
special case it seems that the key has been chosen by
the provider intentionally to convey a message to the public ;)

The Yankse 1.20.1 monitor displays the following grey line:

Provider 0070 S2 Tele+
Key BD

5E CA 20 15 DE AD 5E CA (kind of weak super encryption :D )

@Razor, what's that spell ? :D

SE CA 2_ IS DE AD SECA
SECA2 is dead SECA

So Uncle Ruppie really had the face to do it again !!!
