Why channel zapping not instant?

Past setup:
• 8-ft dish covering 68.5°E, 75.0°E (Ku), 78.5°E, 83.5°E, 90.0°E, 93.5°E (Ku), 100°E, 105.5°E, 115.0°E
• 6-ft dish at 49.0°E
• Receivers: COSHIP CDVB2000B, Dish TV Zinga

Sold all equipment — want to start again from scratch.

Hi all,

I’ve been comparing my box performance with this video:

On mine, channel zapping feels a bit delayed. What happens is it briefly shows a freeze frame of the current channel, then a freeze frame of the next channel before it actually starts playing. It gives the impression of fast zapping, but in reality there’s still a delay.

Just wondering—could this be down to the image, limited memory, or maybe a heavy skin? Has anyone experienced similar or found a way to get genuinely faster zap times?

It’s easy. :)

That’s because it uses the subscriber card in the card slot via OSCam, or another receiver on the local network with the same setup.

And when FCC Fast Channel Change is enabled, it’s lightning fast. I use that a lot at home, especially when I want to record multiple channels at once.

Just don’t forget that you need to configure your tuner correctly, or have a second cable, for frequencies that are on different polarizations.
 
I tried it for FTA channels on same TP but still slow.
 
If you’re tuning to transponders with a low symbol rate, it will take time.

In the video, I can see that they are using Astra 23.5°E with Canal Digitaal. Their transponders use a symbol rate of 29900, so channel changes are quick.

However, if you are zapping between low-SR transponders, or SCPC (Single Channel Per Carrier) transponders, lock time will be longer. To shorten the lock time in that setup, you need at least two cables coming from the LNB.
Bear in mind that I’m talking about FBC Full Band Capture tuners and Wideband/dCSS LNBs. There are many different configuration options you can play around with. With normal LNBs, you can do something similar, but the functionality will be limited in some cases

The video I attached is also using a Vu+ Zero 4K, same as mine. I’ll try switching between channels on the same transponder with a high symbol rate and see if that improves the zap speed.


Also, just to clarify — the Vu+ Zero 4K I have is not FBC, although you’re absolutely right that FBC setups will switch channels faster. I’m not really looking to replace my box; I’d prefer to get the best possible performance from the hardware I already have.


Do you happen to know which image is being used in that YouTube video? I’d like to try the same setup and compare results.
 
I can see DVB-C in video when channels zap. is it cable or satellite tv?

Is this the reason for faster zapping?
 
Oh yes, you’re right. I didn’t watch the whole video, and I missed the Vu+ Zero 4K part under your post. My answer was more of a general answer. Image shouldn’t play such a big role.

For faster use via satellite, FCC, FBC, dCSS LNBs, and some other parameters are crucial. Cable TV is much simpler, and the frequency range is more compact, and you don’t have polarization and other factors like you do with satellite TV. FCC is possible on digital cable / DVB-C too!

If the channels are FTA/free, zapping is almost instant on cable TV.
But in the video, I can see that there is a server involved. For coded channels, the fastest setup is using the card directly in the card slot via OSCam.
