Why does soap and shampoo burn your eyes?

Try Johnson's Baby Shampoo. 'No more tears' it says on the bottle

IIRC it is the alkali within the soap and shampoo that hurt the eye as tears, the natural eye lubricant (tears) is PH neutral anything other than that in the eye will hurt either alkali or acid

- No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

I think it's something to do with the caustic soda they mix with fats to make soap...
