If many other satellite receivers work fine like my Technomate 4302 for recording why not the Humax I am wondering ?

I suppose because they didn't design it that way? Technically there's no reason why not but presumably they thought that you have a big, fast hard drive inside so why bother.

If the 1000s is like my HDR then you can copy over SD recordings from the internal drive, delete them from the internal drive and then play them from the stick if the internal drive is getting full up.

If it is the Humax HB-1000s it does not have a hard drive and according to the spec the external USB drive has to be minimum 60 GB and be specially formatted for the Humax box. If you do an internet search you can find the full spec, but as the site I found is not a forum sponsor I cannot post a direct link to the site, sorry.

Apologies, thought it was the PVR, not the stripped down version.

As Milamber says an external hard drive can be added although I haven't been able, with a very quick search, been able to find out the requirements. The first thing I would do is check your USB Flash Drive to see what it is formatted to. If it's NTFS it definitely won't work (proprietary to MS) but Fat32 may.

I would't use a flash drive unless there is no alternative.
Depending on the class and type of flash memory, you can wear out the stick very fast (months).
That means all recordings are gone, and you'll have to buy a new one.
You'll be happier with a harddrive - it will last years.

OK, it went wrong, had to delete it.

The info can be found via a well known equipment supplier in the UK
It will tell you all about the type and size of USB required

Yes I could easily get a USB hard drive but it's so convinent to just use my ikcle USB 3.0 flash drive like I can in the Technomate even with timeshift it works perfectly, one of these

My LG refuses to record on usb sticks, it takes external usb drives only. There's a tool I've never tried myself that changes the behavior of the stick and make it appear as a hd.
You might end up destroying the stick if it's not compatible.

The info I took from the seller´s website is as follows,

" As the HB-1000S doesn't have a built in hard drive, you can record via the single tuner to an external USB hard drive (minimum 60GB and must be formatted solely for use with the HB-1000S - for broadcast copyright protection) "

There is no further info there. However, if you visit the " My Humax Forum " select " Freesat HD " and then " HB 1oooS " you will find you are not alone, a few people have posted the same problem there. The answer is the same, pen drives do not work!

The issue of Pen Drives for USB recording goes beyond just this Rx, too.

It took me ages to find one that would work consistently and reliably with my Skybox F3, although since solving the issue I've had a lot of trouble free use - despite Live Pause being enabled most of the time, thus exercising the beast greatly

I'll go find the link .....

.... Here it is

It's fully plausible that the software checks the device type and only accepts HDDs.
During recent discussions on this topic they highlighted that they specifically discourage the use of USB flash-sticks.

In any case, most flash drives arrive formatted as exFAT or FAT32, which are not optimal for use on video recorders.
exFAT and FAT32 are great for copying files to, and reading from, but not good for continous write-cycles as found on video recorders.
The software stacks used on the Humax STBs are Linux-based and can therefore use ext-2 and 3 file system format for the recording partitions.
USB sticks don't work very well with things like journalling file systems, although it is often possible to format them as such.

Furthermore, many USB sticks are designed with circuitry and cell arrangements that mean they work best with exFAT or FAT32.
So formatting them with something else can be tricky, as outlined in earlier post.
