Wikipedia Donation

Today I searched for something and the link to Wikipedia opened the page with a message asking for donations in order to keep the service going and AD Free.
I don't know why they took the option of AD Free in the first place. As it turns out Wikipedia has become very popular and gets millions of visits a month, so why keep doing the same mistake and lose money?
I am willing to donate of course, but how will they know I donated and not show me the same message again next time I browse anything from Wikipedia?
Has anyone got these messages from the UK or anywhere else in Europe?
 
I think it is recorded by the network card mac/cookies.
I have been involved in the maintenance of servers for years using your information.
Like everything else, they have mistakes, but it does not matter.

I don't think they use cookies, because it is an AD Free website, but perhaps I am wrong.

I donated a tenner about a year ago. I don't think they keep any records as the same nag message appeared the next day. The trouble is I use some 4 or 5 different computers so I could have donated from any of them.
 
I donate every year, only a tenner, but I use it a lot. :)

As do I however there should be a public warning because the way information is verified, by collusion between members, means that total fabrications have and do appear on Wiki pages
 
There was a report a few years ago that when Wikipedia was compared against a traditional encyclopaedia (Britannica?) that they both had a similar level of accuracy. I think it just shows up more in Wikipedia because the errors (misinformation?) are in a more noticeable position.

The main difference being an encyclopedia that you have bought never updates, only buying a new one got you up to date
 
I think that was the on-line version which does.
