Excuse me for perhaps being a bit ignorant about this but I am a relative virgin to satellite receiving. I have an old sky minidish left on the side wall of our house. We live in a fairly poor reception area of the south of england and I was thinking of buying a skybox of some sort and then using a free sat card to get access.

Someone has told me that sky plus boxes will not work without paying them but I can't see how they can control this?

I would be grateful if anyone can help.

Cheers

The sky+ box needs the card to be set to allow recording by sky, without this it's just a digibox with a hard drive it can't use...

If all you're going to view is the 'free to view' channels, don't waste your money on a sky+ box. Just get yourself a standard sky digibox, it'll do exactly the same job.

or if you want to get into multisat get a hard drive ready receiver and dragon cam, or dreambox. you can then record the same as sky+ even pause live tv!

so a SKY+ box can't / won't record the FTA channels even with a FREESAT card installed ? it will only record if there is a SKY subscription running ??

Yes and if it you don't have at least two premium channels, then there is a £10 per month charge at the moment.
