Of course everything here is forward compatible.

But a customer asked earlier, so what are the minimum requirements for a relatively modern and functional PC ?

The bar has been set high for the final rollout. Even some motherboards that are quite recent dont meet the minimum specs. However this is not because of any real hardware reason but the insistence that TPM 2.0 (trusted platform module) is operational on the mobo. No TPM 2.0 = no Win 11.

As far as I understand it atm its possible to get around the minimum requirements but there is no guarantee that they will continue to work.

Its my own belief that the hardware requirements will be eased before full launch (otherwise winn 11 will be the next vista launch disaster!)

Run a PC Healt and you will know
You can always download w11 as an iso and install it.
TMP 2 is wanted, usually found in the cpu or on the mobo but almost every mobo with at least 4 mb will work

Well MS never fails to confuse me and the rest of the world, my curiosity finally got the better of me so I ran the Win 11 PC health check on my old lappie and it passes on everything even TPM II but it fails on processor support.
FFS Microsoft, it is a core I5 processor and for some reason, you deem it should not be supported on Win 11 WHY?

There are videos showing how to bypass the Windows 11 health check, by downloading Windows 11, of their website, and altering 1 file.
I lost the link, I had, when my PC crashed, and destroyed a lot of my saved items, following yet another Windows 10 update.
It took sometime but I did manage to recover about 85-95%

My computer has not met the conditions to install Windows 11, because of an Intel i7 processor four years ago. And yet, after a tweak ( here) to the registry and Windows 11.iso on a stick. I could install this version without problems.
And now, after a month and something, the check with WindowsPCHealthCheckSetup. The computer does not meet the requirements, but I had no problems updating.

I don't believe the 'i' number makes a difference.

The other half is running an an i7 thing and that isn't upgradeable.

(may be due to other factors, will check later)

So what does?
On hers, only the TPM value but others can fail a number of the standards lower on the list (under all results).

There is also not having Win10 in the first place...

So what does?
Another machine I've had the chance to look at last night, with a lowly i3 processor.

Aside from the secure boot that I could probably set up, TPM 2.0 compatibility is confirmed.

and a list from PCWorld (stop sniggering at the back ) on CPUs with the promise of Win10 functionality out of the box. Intels under 8th generation are duds.

My i3-2120 has no chance :-rofl2

A perfectly usable computer even if the mobo is a decade old. Looks like I'll be moving over to one of the linux flavours when win 10 goes EOL

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
So what does?
It's not the "i" number as such but the "generation number" which follows that and thus i7-7xxxx & generations (6xxxx, 5xxxxx etc) before that aren't upgradeable whilst i7-8xxxxx and generations after that are, or should be, with the correct TPM chip

Being a long time user of Linux (I missed the MS Windows bus many years ago) and having used many flavours of Linux in the intervening, for anyone nervous about the switch over, I suggest giving Zorin Linux a spin. It’s a relatively new project that concentrates on giving the potential user the opportunity to transition to Linux from MS Windows/MAC OS without too big of a learning curve or a UI shock. The biggest benefit of course is it can be run on a moderately spec computer. Details can be found here Zorin OS - Make your computer better.
