Win 7 updates have stopped ??

DEliberate of not ...this DOES happen ..as I know only too well ...
I recently built an SDR only pc with a windows 7 OS ...and have had nothing but trouble ever since ..
mainly cos all the bits I needed like dot net 4 and even windows sevice pack 1 could not be got ..
not even an upgrade to IE11 was possible ..
as each needed update relied on a previous ..update ..
This prolly wont apply to PCs which are kept up-to-date ...thus have avoided the AHEM ...bottleneck instigated by microsoft ..
Well ..after much digging and trying various things to get it going again ..
I happened accross this reply on a MS tech forum ..
So far it is working ...and currently am downloading a backlog of 160+ updates having rebuilt the OS from the ground up ..
Service Pack 1 IS essential ..and I obtained that both as an update in KB form ..and eventually an ISO image...
So for a new (old) build this is the first thing to install..

Manicscrewdriver posted a good one.
wsuoffline 1062.it is an offline updater.
I think that it dose xp vista w7 w10 Thats from a failing memory so could be wrong.
I have used it successfully.

Its called patch day and it is the second tuesday of every month. It has been for years now. Only very urgent updates are provided at other times. So every second wednesday morning you should have a bunch of updates to install.

And that essentially was the problem ..
These _were_ Urgent updates as the operating system is in limbo without them ..
But still couldn't get past that bottleneck ..
In other words building a new OS of win 7 from Installation disk ..forwards to ..up-to-date ...
simply was no longer possible as it hits this corruption ..or bottleneck in the update procedure ..
MS f****d up ..either deliberately or accidentally ...
imo ...why would they even care ..?

When your install from the installation DVD the WSUS client is a very old (actually ancient) version. KB3102810 supplies a newer WSUS client. After installing KB3102810 the PC will be able to get the lastest WSUS software which in turn the installs the updates needed. Happens all the time. A bummer, if it happens the first time, because even on the MS technet or support pages the information to solve the problem are somehow hard to find. I suppose MS want you to join the W10 club, which I still refuse. And I am the master of 40+ business PC's.

Have you tried changing the date/time settings of the PC ?

I used to find this would allow me to run antivirus software well outside the official one year period.

No its gone further than that now - the trickle down one at a time updates are ending and you get one wham bam thank you mam update with all the little updates rolled up into it

(Which also means there is absolutely no way to find out whats actually inside it - hmm no I dont think so MS....)

If patching actually makes a difference then surely at some point there will be less updates. And cumulative updates are in some cases like Exchange etc. the best way to keep your system running since someone else already did the debugging when they installed the single updates.

Also, the Windows 10 free time will end soon and then they update madness will get back to normal.

I loathed everything that went before, with the honourable exception of 7.

But 10 hasn't given me a moment's grief since starting to use it on a two-in-one ten-incher a few months ago. Took but a few minutes to disable the privacy collecting features.

This explains why my machines havnt been updating the last few months, I got so cheesed off, because windows update was starting with the computer taking up 1gb ram, and not letting me download any updates.
I have changed one machine to Linux the other is still on W7 but I dont use that one much. For everyday basic use Linux will do me fine.

Compare W10 below the hood with W8.1 and you will find hardly any changes. The major difference is the user interface (which by the way has not been changed for Server 2012 but will be implemented in Server 2016). The other change is the licensing model which looks now like an Apple license. Although W10 is currently still available for free, the way we will be buying MS licenses has changed drastically (for both W10 and Server 2016).
As soon as the free time is over MS will force us to install all the "normal" updates. Major release updates will then not be free anymore. The user will be able to decide, if he/she wants to install the update, but at some point the major update will have to be installed to accomodate the "normal" updates. If you do not want to take part in the new update/upgrade game (W10 will be the last and only windows is a bit of a lie of definitions) you can buy enterprise licenses which cost a lot more as the stand-alone license and can only be bought as bulk (many big companies buy hardware w/o OS and the install the licenses via images).
So, while W10 is running smoothly now the question will be, when will MS start to tighten the grip and force the user to pay out, and if you do not fancy to pay ... ???
In general I would say that changing to W10 might be a bit of a trap which I for one will wait out and see what the future has in store for us.

I use Fujitsu PC's and Servers at work (a bit more expensive, but super service). Currently they are still offering W7 with a free upgrade option to W10. And I hope that will continue for some time.

microcrosofts last ditch attemp to wreck win7 os
They appear to have totally fooked up with the update procedure ..
I now have a 64 bit corei7 laptop which I am trying to bring up to speed ..
Apparently others out there are having similar issues.
I have made 3 attempts to do this and in the end turned off automatic updates and gave up..
Basically ...the fail was the same on the first attempt ...but I will describe what I did on the second and third attempt..
Created my own restore point (optional)
ran up services.msc and stopped 'windows update' also stopped 'Background Intelligent services'
With these services stopped ..
Went to Windows>Software Distribution> then deleted the entire contents of 'Datastore' and Download folders ..
Restarted the stopped services ...turned on windows Updates ...and tried again ...and again ..
Exactly the same result all 3 times ...
32 updates found ..
allowed the updates to be installed ...allowed the reboot/restart ..
Always the same error message appears
'Failure configuring Windows Updates
Reverting Changes
Do not turn off your computer'

This happens twice ...but left to complete the process and eventually...
15 minutes later ...breath a sigh of relief the lappy having returned to the condition before the attempted udgrade or repair

If at any time this long process is interrupted ...one becomes the owner of a very expensive paperweight...
