Windows 10 update - All your files are where you left them

Yesterday evening our old Toshiba laptop (2010?) running Windows 10 decided it was going to update itself without anyone clicking on "OK, go ahead and make my computer unusable for the next X minutes". I left it to its own devices overnight.

This morning the laptop was closed (my wife must have closed it at some stage) so I opened it again, turned it off and wandered off.

When I got back the only thing on the screen was (white on blue background)

All your files are exactly where you left them

The computer did not respond to the keyboard at all.

My immediate thought was that we'd caught some ransomware and the computer was in the midst of happily encrypting everything. I hadn't seen any of the previous messages (if any) because I was doing other things.

or some other rubbish, followed by more crap. It took a good 10 minutes to come back. It took me a good couple of minutes to realise that it was just the Windows update. ****** Microsoft - sometimes there are no words for their stupidity. Somebody thought that those messages would be a good idea, and then continued to think they were a good idea once out in the wild :(
 
Yes, Micros**ft are as annoying as ever, but I do like Windows 10 on the whole.

Still got Linux Mint running on SWMBO's Laptop, though.

I'd have bet my house on you mentioning Linux Mint in the ensuing discussion :D But yes, point taken. Am seriously considering it.
 
Not meant as evangelism, HB, especially as my distaste for Windows has been assuaged by Win 10. I just think it wise to have a bit of diversity, to eliminate common-mode issues.

:) I have a personal preference for all things unixy. With unix if push comes to shove there aren't many problems I can't fix with a boot CD and vi :). Alas, various programs (eg Garmin GPS update software) only come in Windows flavors and messing around with WINE is something I want to avoid.

No. At least, not in any invidious way.

There is, of course, an Update Manager, but you don't have to run it if you don't want.

All is under User Control.

Mind you, it might be a different story with Progs you install eg Browsers.
 
ref. w10 update activity, this is funny > Windows 10 interrupts a live TV broadcast with an unwanted upgrade

Still got many good years to come here, with w7 \ properly set up 8.1 so zero hurry, nice to be just an observer, but sad to see how the control\ownership of ones 'personal' computer is eroded away by w10\MS. Just my opinions.

Was watching the business news the other day & they were saying Microsoft were shifting away from O.S. software to focus on their office support business. In other words nobody is interested in their home P.C. market anymore, its crap!

Wait until you get the BSOD with the QR code on it, it screams "scan here so we can encrypt your smartphone and run up your phone bill" :-lol
