Yesterday evening our old Toshiba laptop (2010?) running Windows 10 decided it was going to update itself without anyone clicking on "OK, go ahead and make my computer unusable for the next X minutes". I left it to its own devices overnight.
This morning the laptop was closed (my wife must have closed it at some stage) so I opened it again, turned it off and wandered off.
When I got back the only thing on the screen was (white on blue background)
The computer did not respond to the keyboard at all.
My immediate thought was that we'd caught some ransomware and the computer was in the midst of happily encrypting everything. I hadn't seen any of the previous messages (if any) because I was doing other things.
Then it went to
or some other rubbish, followed by more crap. It took a good 10 minutes to come back. It took me a good couple of minutes to realise that it was just the Windows update. ****** Microsoft - sometimes there are no words for their stupidity. Somebody thought that those messages would be a good idea, and then continued to think they were a good idea once out in the wild
