My Satellite Setup
Dreambox 500-s

hi everyone,

recently bought a dreambox 500s and a linksys ethernet bridge (WET54G) to hook it up to my wireless network. I configured the bridge and made it 'see' my home wireless network.

so far so good...

the problem comes when hooking it up to the dreambox. I'm using a crossover ethernet cable but the bridge doesn't seem to even recognise that something is connected (LED off). Is there any extra setting that I need to adjust on the dreambox to activate its ethernet port? :S please help!

thanks in advance

You should be using a patch cable, not crossover, crossover is only for connecting devices directly to one another, e.g. the Dreambox directly to a PC,

still no luck...it's quite frustrating. I connected the bridge to my macbook, disabled my airport connection and everything went smoothly. connected to the net and all. the problem seems to be from the dreambox's ethernet.

is there a particular setting i should be aware of? all i did was set it to dhcp. everything else should go automatically shouldn't it?

That should do it,

All else being correct, DHCP should get your dreambox connected, assuming its enabled as a service on your router.
It seems your cable could be the problem.

You'll need to post your IP settings for Dreambox, linksys and gateway (ADSL device)

tried multiple cables that worked fine elsewhere! (sorry for gunning every idea down...i've exhausted many possibilities)

Gateway:
IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP Server: Enable
Start IP Address: 192.168.1.100
End IP Address: 192.168.1.149

Linksys WET54G
IP Address: 192.168.1.105
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

i tried giving my dreambox a static ip (192.168.1.106) with all the parameters above but still nothing.

I cant see anything wrong with that, (I'm not familiar with how the Linksys works though).

Can you connect your macbook directly to your dreambox using crossover cable?

How about connecting your dreambox directly to your Gateway with cable, just for testing.

If none of the above work, you might have a faulty dreambox / ethernet chip,

ok...here is a summary of the tests i've done based on a little ethernet LED i can see through the vents on the dreambox:

dreambox - router OK
dreambox - laptop OK
dreambox - linksys X

and in terms of general functionality:

linksys - laptop OK
linksys - router OK

so the ONLY problem seems to be the dreambox ethernet chip not recognising the linksys. all the cables I used are standard (i just discovered the one i thought was a crossover wasn't).

Based on what you say, It has to be a configuration problem between the Dreambox and the Linksys rather than a hardware fault in the chip,

I'm running out of ideas,

Why are you checking LEDs to determine whether or not you have a connection,

You should probably be trying to ping the dreambox or connect with some application like putty, DCC or your web browser......

Hopefully another member will have a WET54G and be able to suggest something.

PS: A quick google turns up a lot of results where people are having trouble with this device.

EDIT: Can you post your Dreambox LAN settings.

I wouldn't do this:

Start IP Address: 192.168.1.100

Linksys WET54G
IP Address: 192.168.1.105

as you will get an IP conflict.

The Linksys is setup as an Access Point? The Dreambox gateway is 192.168.1.1?

Can you post a screengrab of your Communication Setup page?

Did you read the other recent thread on a similar topic?

@compufunk
the LEDs were just an indicator as to whether or not the dreambox's ethernet was engaged. a bit primitive granted but it gave me some results :p
i have noticed others with problems but those were mainly to do with setting up the device with their wireless network. that went fine for me. it's just the final connection that isn't working

@mhku
my router/adsl modem is the DHCP client and so it just automatically assigned the linksys bridge that IP address. my current communication setup page is as follows:

IP 10.0.0.97
Netmask 255.0.0.0
LAN
Nameserver 193.188.XX.XXX edited by admin
Gateway 127.0.0.1

apart from the namesever, those look like the default values. I tried connecting the dreambox via a shared connection with my laptop but didn't have a crossover so i presume that's where it got the nameserver values from.

thanks for your help btw! much appreciated :)

I have to say, I've never had any problems configuring machines with static IP addresses that were within a DHCP range, If thats what your getting at. Have you seen this cause problems before?

I use a Netopia (Work) and a Zyzel (Home), Both of which detect machines with static addresses and don't assign those addresses to any other machine.

This is the Dreambox - 10.0.0.97? But your LAN uses a 192.168.1.n 255.255.255.0 IP range?

Personally I assigned a fixed IP address to my wireless router and only use DHCP for my wireless computers.

precisely why i have a problem! the dreambox just doesn't seem to register the bridge connected to it!

They need to be on the same range.

If you're not using DHCP on the Dreambox change it's IP address to 192.168.1.111 or whatever (192.168.1.n that is not in the same range as the DHCP server).

It may work having a 10.0.0.n on a 192.168.1.n network but I'm not looking it up ;)

maybe IP conflict!....set the DB to DHCP...turn off all PC/MAC's etc...reboot Linksys, then DB, then PC, go into Linksys via PC check connected devices...should show both PC +DB...best Luck

in the end i just gave up with that. there was a bigger problem with the bridges connection to the dreambox. even the guide posted in the wireless sticky uses an older version of the same bridge...

i went out and replaced it with a WAP54G and now everything is running smooth :D so happy!

thanks for all your help!
