Sky halts Plex side-loading on Now TV boxes by nixing developer mode

Sky has disabled the ‘developer mode’ on its £10 Now TV boxes to prevent users side-loading apps that could be used to stream illegal content.

“The latest update has been designed to safeguard the device from piracy and illegal streaming of content; therefore it will disable the use of unofficial third party software or apps,” community manager Karl-F wrote.

“This will not affect your ability to watch NOW TV or download supported apps through the Channel Store.”

The Now TV box, of course, is just a re-branded Roku designed to promote Sky’s on demand streaming platforms alongside terrestrial platforms like iPlayer and 4oD.

However, a small community of users had chosen to enact developer mode and install apps like the Plex Media Centre, opening the box up to a much wider range of content.

Bring back the days of just four Channels, selected by pushing a thunking great button on the telly's front panel.

If you were posh, either the Butler did it, or you used a bamboo cane as a remote telecommando

So, a choice of being told what I can do on a lobotomised "NOW TV" Roku box, oooooooor, having the freedom to choose what I can do on an original, non-lobotomised Roku, hmm, let's see here, dictated to by a corporation only interested in profit, or the right to choose my own source for media, I think I'll stick with the Roku 2XS... :D

Surely the captivating content of Now TV would prevent viewers from ever dreaming of looking elsewhere.

Plex is nothing more than a media server, designed to stream your content from your server to your devices, if it's got stuff downloaded from the 'net for your own personal viewing cos you have it on disc already and couldn't be bothered ripping it yourself (like me), then that's your business, not $ky's... :)

Yes but sky claim that most people had "modified" plex to allow you to watch other content not on your nas.

I'd like to see the evidence of their claims, I'm sure they have lots of it, that is, the hearsay and conjecture which is enough for their kangaroo courts... :-rofl2

The testcard is or was better than the drivel they peddle on TV these days! I even have the CD's of the music so I can relive some of the nostalgia...

Many children's dislike of clowns stems from prolonged exposure to that test card.

Admitting to what? Having their own media server with their own media on it to watch in their home? I do that too!! I don't stream 3pm football with Plex though, cos it's not possible (at least not to my level of expertise with Plex), I don't use Plex to break encryption, and I don't use Plex to watch subscription TV without paying, so admitting to watching backed-up media is a bit of a pointless piece of "evidence", but like I say, it's fine for $ky's kangaroo courts, where everyone without a subscription is a thieving criminal, even those who gave up watching broadcast TV... :-doh
