Wot, no land mine?

Just be thankful I didn't take any photos during the process!

And don't get me started about smellyvision...

Wot, no land mine?
I searched and searched, in vain, on YouTube for the Michael Bentine Square World sketch about the land mine. Anybody else, bar me, remember it? Even better, can anyone point a link to a clip?

Was it in colour Paul? I wondered if it was Potty Time or The Bumblies

Which episode/season ?

Amazon appears to have most of them for Prime.

When I worked at Malham Tarn Field Centre many many years ago, I got given the job of digging out the grease trap one blistering hot summer afternoon. Now this was a hole 2 feet wide & 6 feet long and an unknown depth. It turned out the grease was pretty much solid. We couldnt shift it and the boss went green when he came out to see how we were getting on. So a vacuum tanker sucker was hired. It turned out the depth of the pit was getting on for 6 feet after a good hour of disgusting slurping & sucky noises!

And the smell was hideous :-rofl2

No, neither of those. It was definitely earlier: It's a Square World (BBC) or possibly All Square (ITV). Probably B&W.

Because of this thread's 'off tangent' waver to Michael Bentine, I was interested enough to get hold of a copy of his autobiography, "The Reluctant Jester". I searched the index for references to land mines and the nearest I could get was an episode of 'Square World' which had a sketch titled 'NATO War Games' using model tanks on a table top battlefield. Do you think this is the episode you remembered Paul?

No it's not that.

As I remember it the sketch took place on a beach with some 16th century explorers meeting up with some natives of that area. The chief of the natives said "Land mine!" and the leader of the explorers said "No, no. I'm sorry but it's not yours any more. I claim it on behalf of the King." This banter continued in a similar manner for a few more exchanges until the explorers moved away from the natives. Upon which there was an explosion blowing up the explorers and the native chief said, with a shrug, "Landmine."

I spent 15 years working for a portable toilet company doing similar - I can still smell it now!!o_O

Big change to now be doing IT work, but it stinks even worse (metaphorically speaking)

tell me... I just didnt go through this thread, for whole 5 mins. :-toilet

^^ Yup -fun wasn't it?

It does sound like something Spike Milligan penned (or possibly sketched)

According to IMDB it's only Michael Bentine and John Law with credits as writers.

:D

Thats the wonderful thing about this forum - when we let the non technical threads wander off topic you get some great stories & anecdotes coming out

Which reminds me...

Some fifty odd years ago the family (mum, dad, younger brother and me) went to Abersoch for a holiday. We hired a caravan (Sid's Caravans) for the week. There was a chemical toilet in the caravan and one of the chores was to take the toilet to a cess pit in the next field and tip the contents in.

My dad and I took the toilet and my brother tagged along. The cess pit was literally just a deep square hole in the ground which, no doubt, was just filled in at the end of the season. Anyway, we left my mum behind in the caravan and the next thing she heard was an horrendous scream from my brother. My mother had visions of him having fallen into the cess pit and was working out what to do with him as she had no intention of letting him back in the caravan!

Fortunately he had not fallen in to the cess pit but had tripped and fallen into a nettle patch. Pretty painful but probably not as bad it could have been.
