After 38 years (I bought it new in 1980) my Panasonic SU-2800 stereo integrated amplifier has died.
I was playing a record, side one finished so I flipped the disc, placed down the stylus and the amp let out a loud hum on the right channel and refused to do anything else. This hum/buzzing is present on all inputs and even does it when the volume is set to minimum and sources like cd, turntable, tape deck are off and rca plugs pulled out.
R.I.P. my old Panny - I think it did well to last as long as it did.

Question here now is I am looking at a replacement and the candidates are a Pioneer A10 or a Yamaha AS301 - anyone have any thoughts/experience on these?
They both have all the inputs I require. The Yamaha has remote control, which would be novel to me for hi-fi......oh and more power....

Sorry to hear about the Panny, maybe it's worth fixing :)

Are you based in the UK, Richer Sounds has a good deal on that Yamaha.
It also has a built in DAC which is very handy! You can connect spare computer or Raspberry Pi to it and enjoy some internet radio/spotify etc as well

Both have MM phono stages as well, I'd take the Yamaha, looks great for the money!

I live in Ireland, but there's a Richer Sounds in Belfast (I'm due a visit there soon anyway)

Not sure I could get it fixed anywhere here abouts

I don't see any HDMI inputs on both models. Perhaps you don't need them but I find it more convenient to connect the HDMI outputs of my STB's to the amplifier HDMI inputs.

Audio Amps typically dont have HDMI, only AV amps mainly.
Most devices have optical or spdif output as well or you can get a HDMI to either of those outputs.

If you were in mainland and passing i'd have had a look at it for you,
Might be worth having a look inside if you are comfortable doing that?

I guess I could lift the lid and see if there are any bulging caps etc. I'll be back in England (Staffs) in June but I'm flying in, so no way of bringing it with me, thanks for the offer.
I do intend to visit the "Big Pit" sometime (memory lane for me) so if I do......

That's a shame mate.

Yeah bulging caps, dry joints, burnt out resistors... Probably something simple :)
Interested to see if its a module for the pre/power section or if its discretes, interested to see pictures internally if it's not any trouble?

Google found this...

"STK2028 Sanyo Audio output IC replaced restoring correct operation."
So it is a module on this then, might be a dry joint or need replacing :)

It could be a failure of one of the AC to DC rectifiers, this can be traced down using a volt meter set to the AC mode and looking at the DC circuits, any AC at all above the spec could point to a bad rectifier stage.

Are stereo amplifiers still in regular production? for example the Yamaha and Pioneer models that you mentioned in your first post.
The Yamaha has a slight advantage over the Pioneer model. It has coaxial and digital inputs which might be useful.

Very much so! Probably more popular than AVR's in the UK :)
If I could find a reasonably priced AVR that has Front Channel Line out :(

The silver box at the bottom of my AV Stand is the DAC, my TV/Sat goes in here over Optical.

The amp on the left is purely Analogue and just a "Stereo Amplifier"20180331_144440.jpg

Thanks. We have only AVR's in Israel last time I checked.
You have a nice setup. I have my TV and all my boxes and two Wharfedale loudspeakers on top of the table which is 3.9m long, made from three Ikea TV stands 1.3m long each. This way I don't have to put anything inside the shelves as it can be a back and knees killer at my age.

No problem. It is a big mess at the moment but will do it.
Here is a photo of the Ikea Magiker TV table
It was on sale at the time three for the price of two and they fit exactly where I have the TV
