old sky box, sky+hd no subscription

Hi guys, tearing my hair out here. I have two tv,s (one in the living room one upstairs). both have a sky +hd box (no subscription). The downstairs TV has started to play up big time (no signal from the dish). I have made sure the two leads in the back are properly connected, the strange thing is I still get forces tv channel yet cant get any others. If I look at setup I can see i got good signal strength on both upstairs and downstairs> I have also tried unplugging leaving it etc, it sometimes work but more often than not it fails. I also tried switching boxes over and tvs the result of this was nothing worked upstairs or down, I put everything back as it was and left upstairs unplugged after a few hours i plugged it in and that now works. I was in the process of buying a new Tv but this is on hold now untill I can sort this out, I was also looking at other makes of sat boxes (manhatten, lumix, freesat etc) but that looks to be a minefield especially in my price bracket (under £100). So any suggestions as to what to do it would be much appreciated.
Thx
Lisa

Change the boxes over. If the fault switches rooms then you have narrowed it down to a receiver fault. If the fault remains in the original room then either the cabling is at fault or the lnb is on the way out.

Chances are though is a box fault - probably failing capacitors in the power supply section of the box.

I would start with a new Quad Lnb and see if that makes a difference .

i swopped the boxes over and neither worked then,, I cant understand why it shows good signal strength but keeps coming up "no signal being received" surely there is a signal if its showing in setup?

No need to buy an lnb yet. Just swap the boxes over as I mentioned earlier

Ok just switched boxes over (again lol) and they are both working ATM for how long though no idea, weird

update after 5 mins the downstairs one is losing signal, only a matter of time i think

gone completely downstairs but still have forces channel, it is so annoying lol

So the fault has stayed in the room? If so you have an issue with the lnb or the cabling. Is there any damage to the cabling - outer sheath nibbled by rodents, nicked by hedge trimmer etc?

nothing that I can see, but why do i still get the one channel? surelly that would be off also, the lnb is quad would changing the lead to an empty one do anything? only two are used

Yes try changing it - but ONLY if you have completely safe access to it. Have a look at the inside of the connector & make sure its not heavily corroded.

You should have more than 1 channel. If you get Forces TV you should also get Challenge, Challenge +1 & Together as they are all on the same frequency
