Looking for a Norsat 9000B-2 Ka-Band LNB



Just out of curiosity, what is it within Band B Ka that takes your interest

What is your budget?

I have a brand new and boxed Norsat 9000BF DRO LNB, with L.O. stability figure of +/- 1 MHz and gain of 55db. I think it is the earlier version of the 9000B-2.

The figures for the Norsat 9000B-2 (DRO) are listed as L.O. stability of +/- 2 MHz and gain of 60db so there does not seem to be much between them.

There is an XMW feed horn (FD9000) that is available online, link to supplier below. I have also attached a picture attached below of an FD9000 feed horn installed on a prime focus dish with an XMW LNB attached to it.



If you can get a Ka-Band feed horn that is matched to your dish that would be your best option.

The stuff with pictures that is available to a UK location is on Ka-Band frequencies via sub bands A B, C and D. Multiple sub band LNB's are available commercially but they are not cheap. A pair of LNB's to cover sub bands A and D is a useful set to get. You will also need a feedhorn.

Once you have sourced the equipment, it is a matter of setting up the Ka-Band LNB with feed horn on the dish and setting the L.O. in your receiver. A Technomate TM5402 receiver can accept Ka-Band L.O.'s as can a Dr HD D15 receiver. Once the kit is setup just scan as you normally would for C-Band or Ku-Band.

Be prepared for a frustrating time with a fair bit of expenditure. The equipment if bought over the counter is not cheap and the signal levels can be quite variable with fine adjustments involved to get it right.

Ka band exploration is not quite as 'Plug & Play' as Ku or C-band is, sourcing surplus Ka band equipment can be difficult & expensive and also is spread over four or more separate band segments normally requiring a dedicated lnb / feed/ poloriser depending on what you want to receive. I have spent many years searching and collecting surplus Ka bits so you have to keep your eyes open on a regular basis for stuff to come up.
Can you give us an idea of what your 'Project' might entail - it would give us a better idea on how to pass on our mistakes and successes to you

Is there a plate that can me moved or removed?

The Aussie site says it's WR-41, maybe that's not a typo if you have to drill the holes out!

That is a very cheap price, it shows what the markup can be on these Ka components. At that price of €39 it is worth it just to see if there is a plate inside it that can be removed?

The seller of the €39 FD9000L is reliable, I have bought stuff from them in the past and they shipped quickly to the UK.

I managed to buy two from them about a year and a half ago but i don't think he has them in stock any more as although you can see them on the site it does not have a 'buy' option - at least not on my computer anyway. Although they 'work' on Band D 21.2 -22.2 - it states on them only up to 20GHz. I tend to use a scalar feed now that actually come off the surplus Band D Hughes or Gilat ODU's which really do perform better and really match well to the 1.2 Gibby i use for Ka stuff.

That might be a contributing factor to my signal levels going down when I compared the Ka-Band D performance of a Precision 2.0m dish with Gilat LNB on the FD9000 feed with a Precision 1.5m dish with Gilat LNB on the Elite Antennas Ka feed?

The Ka-Band D range of 21.20 - 22.20 GHz might have been too far above the optimum scope of the FD9000 feed whereas the Elite Antennas Ka feed could manage it easily?
 
satellite superstore are selling what they say is ka band lnb for £30, no mention of whether band a b c or d, is it the ghz whice determines the letter?

Yes, it is the GHz range that determines the Ka-Band letter.

That LNB sold by Satellite Superstore is for use on 9.0 East for the RTE channels on Ka-Band B. As far as I know, it is no good for any of the stuff on Ka-Bands A and D.

Of the 9 Ka-Band satellites that host frequencies with video that are easily visible to most UK locations, only 1 of the 9 uses Ka-Band B (9.0 East)
