New hard disc not recognised in windows 7

You mentioned (specifically) Diskmgmt.msc .................. Did you access this via Search box or by another route?

Reason I ask is because the .msc bit has no prominence if you take the route I mentioned.

That's what it said when I googled the problem, seems a lot of people have had the issue.

So I just type disk management into the search box ?
 
Yes.

Then don't press anything (like Enter!) and await the results.

Top result is "Create and format hard disk partitions": Click on that.

That should get you in.
 
right I have found that and it brings up a window and in it just says connecting to virtual disk service and nothing is happening

Does that on mine, but if left only a couple of seconds, it goes past the start-up for the Virtual Disk Service to "Loading Disk configuration information" then gives me the full banana.

Sounds like summat is firked, then: It is hanging during start-up.

Edit: I've just Googled "Win 7 Disk Management hanging"........................ Oh dear, oh dear!


Some reports of success in Safe Mode: Must be worth a try as it's not as if you'd want to use Disk Management very often.

Also, if you want to try it again in normal mode, some suggest it just takes ages (minutes) to move from starting VDS to the next step.
 
PS: If that all fails, too, have a shufti at Event Viewer Logs and see if you can pin down the cause of the hang.

Windows is very good indeed at either just refusing to do what one wants or giving you an error message that states the bleeding obvious but singularly omits to tell you how to fix it (That's what Google is for!!)
 
Looking at the event viewer it looks like there is a corrupted file that's stopping vds.exe from launching.

I'm just checking my hard disc as it also mentions a bad block on hard disc 1

I can run SFC /scan now to run the system file checker for any damaged files after checking the disc for bad sectors etc first
 
Ok.

Corrupted file is certainly one possible cause.

Driver clashes are another - hence the Safe Mode idea. That won't overcome a corrupted file, though!

Can you not use the proposed External Drive as your C: and use the one with Bad Sectors as External Storage?

I was going to replace the c: drive with an SSD, the reason i bought the 2tb drive to have as a data drive.

I hadn't configured the win 7 install anyway.

Looks like I might have to buy the SSD sooner than I thought, prices are coming down for them anyway.

 
It seems the windows drive is on its way out, looking at new hard disc prices they are strange on aria they have

500gb for £38.99
1tb for £52.69

the 1tb is better value but it dont need that size for a windows drive or I could as a temporary windows drive and then use it for back up ?

Is windows 7 is a pain to reactivate after the first time activating ?
 
Step one: Tell windows to go eff itself with its useless HDD management

Step two: Go to the following website and download EaseUS Partition Master (Free version, cos it's cheaper than paying!!):

www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

Step three: Sit back and relax as a piece of software that knows what it's doing creates and formats the partitions properly and effectively... :)
