So why do you draw a line across it then........ Its a great shot,even the glow from the lights looks cool.

Actually, I'll let you into a secret, it's an extradimensional rod creature...

Try to correct the exposure ( glare from lighting ) or crop with photoshop or other photo prog.

It's a tricky balance between over exposure of the bright streetlights or under exposure of the aurora so I focused more on the aurora.

But if I crop out the city it just becomes a bad quality photo of northern lights and that's not fun. ;) I've taken plenty of photos of them in Lapland in the dark with better results.

If you like garish photos took this 20 years ago on positive film developed in negative film developer then printed on positive paper ( normal and mirror image ) joined together ( but now sadly join visible )

Interesting. I had a mate at university who used to do "real" developing in a dark room (or under the duvet) but I never really got into photography properly until the digital camera came along... (my first one was a size of a brick and took 320x240 sized images, had no card slot and just a serial cable for download)

I agree, it is nice to see the city. So many photos are made in the countryside. The city adds some ambience and the plane makes an unusual line so it has plenty of interest. Its not your bog standard trees and lights shot.

Had only 274kb to work with, cropped with photoshop ( converted to png. file 493kb ) to highlight the main feature whilst still retaining the city lights for ambience.

Hope copyright holder approves.

Not long after moving to our current gaff (10 years ago) we were privileged, on a few occasions over a period of a couple of weeks, to have a Sparrowhawk perched on our Bird Bath, a mere two metres from the Drawing Room window.

It just sat and watched us with a disdainful look.

Not seen it again, despite us being awash with small feathered titbits.

hi -
I was walking in the yorkshire dales area near where i live the other day - when this monster flew overhead and landed near me .
then i saw it was being flown by a "falconer" a few hundred yards away.
i believe it is a "Steller,s sea eagle" it was a very impressive sight - especially when in the air .

It wasn,t near there? - it was just outside horton in ribblesdale (near Penyghent)
there is a falconry centre about five or six miles a way but it does not list one of those birds .
maybe its privately owned ?

Quite spectacular birds, one of the biggest and certainly owner of one of the strongest beaks around.
