can someone explain to me and tell me what it is called when you get signal in winter you couldn't get before is there a name for it (other than lucky LOL) Someone once explained it as in winter the Axis of the earth changes slightly and with it come a slight improvement of signal.. I cannot normal receive the channel 5's here in Spain but over the last 2-3 weeks it has improved a huge amount to the point of getting solid pictures till around 23:00 you can watch till 23:30 with slight break up.. When we first moved here 7 years ago we had the same thing with channel 4 then in winter we could watch it ok.. I am sure there is a name for this occurrence anyone know what it is and is my explanation of it correct??

I guess there could be slight changes to the footprints as the Earth tilts...but I suspect you also have to include factors such as weather ..and clearer atmospherics on cold bright winter days..
Also the stability and efficiency of lnbs will improve a tiny amount the colder they run.
Then there is background radition/heat which is known to affect signal ..particularly in Cband ..
This too would be much reduced in winter.
Finally and probably only relevant at low elevation reception.
Foliage reduction ...which may reduce a signal at a distance ..even though the trees blocking signal may not be in close proximity thus visible in line of sight.

Just a few guesses.

Thanks for that we don't really suffer from any off those other things as it's pretty clear skies all the time here temp is still around 19 in the day although cool at night with no foliage in the way or anything else for that matter we live half way up a mountain and look down over the valley. Although it will be interesting to see what happens if it clouds over we are supposed to be getting a little cloud over the next couple of days.... Someone did once tell me a name for this happening but i cannot remember it was 7 years ago. I am right on the edge of signal here so any slight change does make a difference.. I like my Axis change explanation .. LOL thanks again Vipersan

I get much better reception on many sats on cold clear nights, so its definitely a real effect. (Especially as Im using undersized dishes &/or offset lnb's for many of them)

When cold and clear there is less humidity, hence less attenuation of signal

The warmer the atmosphere the more water vapour it can hold. You don't have to have clouds or rain to suffer from summer attenuation of signal.

EDIT

Great minds Topper!
