swiss tv sd end of 2015 on hotbird

By getting rid of SD they should be able to reduce their transponders from 3 down to just 2.

It does force people to buy another receiver if they have something with just SD capability though.

It does, but more and more channels are slowly going DVB-S2 and MPEG4. Canal Digital in the Nordic region has been slowly switching channels to DVB-S2 and MPEG4. They've just announced a load of Danish regional channels will switch in March.

I surprised there aren't any MPEG4 SD channels on Sky yet.

In the Benelux the same thing with Canal Digitaal, TV Vlaanderen and TéléSAT (all part of M7).

Apart from the first and second channels in the German, French & Italian languages for Swiss viewers that are SD & HD simulcast, there's also the SD only (and also free to air) SRF Info channel. Presumably it'll remain SD but as MPEG4 video.

I remember SRG-SSR announcing back in 2011 that the main channels would be HD only from some point in 2015. Will be interesting to see what they do with regards to terrestrial as it's SD only with a single multiplex delivering four or five channels depending on what part of the country you're in, though terrestrial only viewers in Switzerland is quite low, most people there have either cable or satellite.
