The Daily Wail was claiming yesterday the Beeb needs to save £100million and were looking at axing either BBC3 or 4.

I would have thought the badly underutilised 27.5W satellite capacity would have been ripe for the chop if things are THAT bad..... and just take the backup tx feeds off 28E instead

Let it be cbbc and cbeebies, that way they can keep bbc3 & 4 and don´t have to use same tp´s for two programs

(you can tell my grandson is in the uk and can get all other sorts of kids tv)

I really hope they keep it. It will be one of the worst decisions they will have made.

I can understand why BBC Three attracts some derision, but it has been a good ground for developing many programes that wouldn't have likely got a chance to develop on BBC One otherwise. Some of BBC Three's output has been dodgy, but that's the risk of some of its experimenting.

There's number of problems I see here. Taking the channel online only has a risk also of setting a precedent that further BBC channels may be shunted to online only in the future on the grounds of cost cutting. This disadvantages viewers and consequently licence fee payers who don't have internet access - or whose internet link isn't up to carrying streaming video either from bandwidth or data caps - whom won't be able to view programming that they have helped contribute to, threatening the universality of access to BBC's content. Secondly, a lot of PSB's worldwide have been accused of skewing program output towards older demographics and neglecting young adults. BBC Three nicely fills that gap for them. Third, in terms of capacity made spare, CBBC will still remain there until at least 7pm I would assume. On Freeview this would leave on SD & HD part time stream blank in the evening, and it would seem ridiculous just so soon after launching a HD stream to suddenly abandon it. I can't imagine that the distribution costs take up a lot of the budget for the channel anyway - if they're going to move the channel online presumably most of the production costs will still remain. What I would look at is the BBC Two costs, it certainly doesn't look like a channel that has over £400 million spent on it a year, not to mention that it seems to have a bit of an identity crises. Maybe it would be better to merge BBC Four into BBC Two to give a single high-brow educational & entertainment channel with a strong budget and use its daytime hours for Cbeebies?

They could merge CBBC and Cbeebies, show stuff for the really young on the morning and as the day goes on they could up their target age range ending up with their oldest age group at tea time/early evening

Theres half the battle down.......... Then they could show both BBC Three and BBC Four content in the evening and through the night
That way they'd fit 4 channels into the space of 1 because lets be honest half the stuff shown on all 4 channels is repeats most of the time anyway

BBC TV channel budgets 2013/14
BBC One: £1,051m
BBC Two: £415m
BBC Three: £85m
BBC Four: £49m
CBBC: £79m
CBeebies: £29m
BBC News Channel: £53m
BBC Parliament: £2m

I can't figure out how going online would save very much. If they are going to be making the same programmes. Surely the biggest expense is making the programmes as the figures for BBC 1 versus those of BBC Parliament would suggest. BBC 1 have to pay for content like Match of the Day and "drama" like East Enders is costly to make whereas the Parliament channel essentially just points cameras at talking heads for free. The actual transmission costs for each channel would be much the same?

No need to axe BBC3 -just stop putting pisspoor comedies on it and put decent programming on it , and get rid of the so called comedians making a living off it.

Yes, I thought the same. Especially as they will have already contracted all the transponder / DTT capacity and are even planning BBC1+1 (pointless IMO). Think this a gentle way of dramatically reducing commissions and slowly winding BBC3 down.

The next idea will be needing the licence fee to watch iplayer.

Getting young(er folk) out of the idea of a tv licence isnt a terribly good idea!

Sure many like me would willingly pay to watch iplayer, pity we have to use dubious means now ( fringe reception )

But that's just subjective - one mans turd is another mans gold and so on. Some of the programmes have achieved pretty good, solid ratings for a none 1-5 channel.
Wonder what they would do with Family Guy & American Dad, they don't have the rights to stream them online either live or the iPlayer and they don't fit with any other BBC channels. Probably would go off to E4, Comedy Central or Viva.
