Sky tp's on 2E UK beam

150cm Gibertini, Andrews (CM) feedhorn, LNB: C120 flange Invacom QDF-031, Sky+HD box

its interesting to see the way sky utilizes those tp's that are now on the (super)narrow 2E UK beams.

10862H - ex-disney (all disney now on wide beam)
now sky sports1hd ireland - obviously not as painful for expats, as i suspect most of them have UK subs.

10921H -
- mostly erotic stuff - even those inclined, does anybody really watch this on satellite? ;)
- tcm sd (hd on wide beam),
- sky 2 ireland, sky living+1 ireland - other versions can be found on a wide beam, sd channels can be added using the "other channels" feature of the sky box

10936V -
- star plus hd - i guess not that important for expats
- watch hd - this is the only hd channel that is not available for the fringers. watch sd is on wide beam, though.

and the latest change:
10876V - ex nickelodeon (all nick now on wide beam)
- now they moved a whole bunch of box office channels here - again, not too important, as most expats dont watch ppv, or if they do, on demand (sky store) via internet is much better anyway
 
I've never been convinced Sky consider the ex-pat market too much when planning their channels. Sky Sports is often quoted as an important selling point for subscribers in Europe, if so why put the Irish one on a UK spot? There's still space on Europe beam transponders. Why not put the Sky Sports in Pubs channels on a UK spot instead as I can't see any of those channels being available in Europe as they need an expensive specialised commercial card to open which aren't going to be available through dodgy 3rd party dealers. There are still plenty of Sky Box Office channels that could go on a UK beam or even some of the +1 versions of channels so ex-pats at least have the normal version.

Personally I think they just happened to end up on the UK spot after some re-shuffles as that is what was available at the time and worked for them.
 
at my favoutire irish pub in budapest they have the "sky sports in pubs" channels, and it's all legit, so i guess those have to be on PE beams. (guess the pub is irish, but their sky sub is UK, otherwise they wouldnt get sports1 now :D)

It can't be legit. Sky Sports in Pubs cannot sell to Europe. Do the Sky Sports channels have the little beer glass logo on screen?

Hi Timo, the bit about the Sky Sports in Pubs is not entirely true. I live in Germany. Here it seems to be a thing to go to the Irish Pub. Many of these Irish Pubs in bigger towns and cities sell Guiness and Killkenny and have Sky Sports subs for English footie and Rugby and it seems to be legal.

I very much doubt it's legal. They don't have right to broadcast to all over Europe.
I think they simply ignore it because no one cares about it.
Here where I live There are also plenty of pubs and bars Irish and from Uk and they all have sky. I don't think that's legal. If someone call sky and tell about they will shut you down.
But is good for business, they simply don't care.
 
Its not legal - "our" Sky only have transmission rights for the UK & Ireland.

Also the pubs abroad will probably be using domestic level subscriptions rather than the expensive commercial subs.

wasnt there a legal precedent a few years ago that ruled that it is, in fact legal to take your box and card abroad and use it there? it is against sky's t&c, but that's another issue...i might be wrong, but i believe i read it somewhere...
 
Just to clarify, the "Sky Sports in Pubs" channel is NOT the same as domestic Sky Sports 1, 2, 3 and 4 we watch on our boxes at home.
 
You can take your own subscription abroad if you so wish, but if you happen to tell Sky that you are watching in eg Spain then your card will immediately be cancelled.

And its most certainly not legal to use a domestic sub in a pub or other commercial premises.
 
yes, i know that sky will switch off the card as soon as i tell them i'm using it abroad - what i was trying to say is that it's different to violate their t&c and to do something illegal.

wasnt there a legal precedent or am i mistaken?

Sky's T&Cs are part of a Contract in Civil Law. Ergo, breach is Illegal (Contrary to Law).

People often confuse Illegality with Criminality.
